I am starting a new series where I take a look at all 36 5A teams and project who their MVP will be in the upcoming season. There will be six teams in each part. Lets dive in!
Valley - [player_tooltip player_id="100952" first="Mason" last="Morrow"] (QB) Class of 2022 Hudl Twitter
Valley had a brutal schedule last year, playing Dowling, Southeast Polk, Ankeny, and Waukee all in one stretch. Mason was finally allowed to start Week 4 when Jake Rubley was ruled ineligible. [player_tooltip player_id="100952" first="Mason" last="Morrow"] impressed throughout the rest of the season and almost revived Valley’s disappointing season. Mason is good off-play action and can get out of negative yardage plays. I think he could have a really good senior year - especially with Dion Hutch and [player_tooltip player_id="23946" first="Eli" last="Raridon"] returning. Mason put up 551 Passing Yards, 3 Passing Touchdowns, 2 Rushing Touchdowns, 4 Interceptions, and a 61.3 Completion Percentage.
Ankeny - [player_tooltip player_id="23967" first="Colin" last="Kadolph"] (HB) Class of 2022 Hudl Twitter
Since his sophomore year, [player_tooltip player_id="23967" first="Colin" last="Kadolph"] has started on varsity and plays a phenomenal role in Ankeny´s offense. He is super quick and bursts out of holes for explosive runs. Colin has excellent ball carrier moves and can also play WR. It’s with good reason that he will be the main point of attack for Ankeny´s offense next season. Ankeny also has a great defense coming back with stars on all levels, so they also deserve a little share in the MVP discussion.
Des Moines Roosevelt - [player_tooltip player_id="24030" first="Jamison" last="Patton"] (ATH) Class of 2023 Hudl Twitter
Jamison has significant upside and is one of the most exciting prospects in the state. He played QB and Safety and seemed to fit in right away. QB-wise he had a solid season, making great plays against both teams he played. He can escape pressure at a high level, and he showed flashes of having a strong arm. Jamison will be taking charge of one of the better teams Roosevelt has had in a while. If Jamison improves his decision-making, he will get more college interest at QB, and I think that more game experience will help him accomplish this goal.
Des Moines Lincoln - Josh Jenkins (RB/DB) Class of 2022
Josh Jenkins put up a quality year for a player who only had two games to work with. He rushed for 147 yards, had 1 Touchdown, and 6.1 Yards Per Carry. Josh is an explosive playmaker who can reach second gear and create big plays. The only problem is that he has a small sample size of games to pull from last season due to COVID. I am interested to see how he and Trent Brown work together.
Marshalltown - [player_tooltip player_id="99198" first="Gannon" last="Williams"] (MLB/TE) Class of 2022 Hudl Twitter
Marshalltown lost senior [player_tooltip player_id="23822" first="Carson" last="Williams"], one of the better players Marshalltown has ever had, but the team is returning some stars. I would say [player_tooltip player_id="99198" first="Gannon" last="Williams"] tops the list as the most productive returner. Gannon had 40.0 Tackles, 21 Solo Tackles, and 2.5 Tackles for Loss on defense. He is a solid tackler and can get through blockers efficiently. On offense, he put up 85 Receiving Yards and 2 Touchdowns. He is a solid blocker who shows quality route running for a guy his size. I am excited to see how he plays his senior season and think he helps replace the loss of [player_tooltip player_id="23822" first="Carson" last="Williams"].
Des Moines North - Nick Crispin (QB) Class of 2023
Due to COVID, Des Moines North has a small sample size of games to pull statistics from, but Nick seemed to have a good year for a sophomore who experienced limited practices and games. He threw for 116 Passing Yards and had a rushing touchdown.
In the next part we will be looking at Group 2 which consists of Dowling Catholic, Johnston, Waukee, Ames, CB Lincoln, and Sioux City North.
