In this article, we take a look into five players I believe could break out this season and become a valued prospect at the college level.
[player_tooltip player_id="118822" first="Trenton" last="Smith"] QB Ames Class of 2024 Hudl
I’m personally very high on [player_tooltip player_id="118822" first="Trenton" last="Smith"] as a prospect. Trenton for starters is a great athlete with all the right tools to play in college. He could play a different position and have success but I like him most at QB. He’s got a great ability to sense pressure around the pocket and can create plays with his feet if his first read is not there. He’s already got a good arm that will only improve later in his career. He will most likely be the starter for Ames this year so he will get the snaps. Trenton’s got a great shot at a successful football career and I’m excited to watch him play this season. An area I would like to see Trenton improve on is decision making but I believe he can fix that with more playing time. Overall one of the more promising athletes in Iowa.
Brady McCullough WR Ankeny Class of 2022 Hudl
Brady McCullough is bound for a breakout season. Brady has an amazing frame at 6’4 202 LBS. He’s quick for his size and has an above-average route-running ability. Brady is also a phenomenal blocker that can create holes for teammates and is physical enough to take a defender completely out of the play. He was part of a loaded WR core but this next season he will be 1st on the depth chart. If Brady improves on his breakaway speed he’s going to make a college very happy on Saturdays. Brady put up 243 Receiving Yards, 2 Touchdowns, 17 Receptions, and 14.3 Yards per catch.
Danny Rankins Jr HB Valley Class of 2022 Hudl
Danny Rankins Jr is going to be a big key in an electric offense. Danny is an explosive back with amazing balance. Danny has a great ability to find holes and can fight for yardage even when it looks like there’s nothing there. Danny is also very shifty and can change direction in the blink of an eye. He’s also very hard to bring down and fights for every yard he can get. The first play in his Junior Season Highlights on Hudl is a dominant run where he sheds four tackles and scores. Valley did not seem to include Danny on many pass plays but I see an increase in that this next season, especially with how Valley used Jayden Williams this past year. Danny has a super high ceiling and I am excited to see how his senior season goes.
[player_tooltip player_id="99342" first="Peyton" last="Goode"] QB/WR/S Ankeny Centennial Class of 2022 Hudl
[player_tooltip player_id="99342" first="Peyton" last="Goode"] was in a weird position his junior year. He started the season as a QB but lost the position battle and was moved to WR where he excelled. He put up 351 Receiving Yards and 3 Receiving Touchdowns. He was the only receiver on his team with a receiving touchdown. Putting up those numbers in a run-first offense is very impressive. Peyton showed great technique as a WR and was able to get open efficiently with his route running. In the first round of the playoffs, he could not be guarded by any defensive back on the opposing team. He put up 159 receiving yards on 5 receptions. Peyton does a great job finding and adjusting to the ball as well. [player_tooltip player_id="99342" first="Peyton" last="Goode"] also shows good promise as a QB. He has a strong arm with a good ability to get out of the pocket. He’s got great footwork and technique in the pocket as well. In one game at QB, he went 5/13 with 85 Passing yards. I think Peyton will have a quality year at either position he plays. I’d say right now it looks like WR is Peyton’s best position but I have been hearing good things from Level Up Athletic Performance about his ability to play QB. I would say there’s a good chance Peyton will breakout this season and land himself a quality offer.
Khameron Middleton HB Dowling Class of 2022 Hudl
When does Dowling not have a quality HB? The answer is never. Khameron Middleton was a big part of Dowling's run game last season and showed elite ball carrier vision. He played some full back along with running back and was able to be an effective blocker creating holes in goal line situations. Khameron also doesn’t tend to go down on the first contact, Multiple times this year he would easily break through leg tackles and fight for at least 3-5 more yards. He was never used in the receiving game this year but I would be interested to see how he would do with more receiving reps. A big thing that would take Khameron’s game to the next level is being able to have the explosiveness to make those 10 yard runs into 40 yards or even 60-yard gains. He has a similar build that Gavin Williams had who flourished in Dowling’s system. Khameron put up 584 Rushing Yards on 109 Carries. He scored 8 Rushing Touchdowns and averaged 5.4 yards per carry. I believe a breakout Senior season is coming for Khameron.
