The Class of 2025 is just starting to join their high school programs, but a few incoming freshmen are already standing out as early leaders of their cohort.
Here are six of the first names to know — most, if not all, of whom will likely play roles for their teams even as ninth graders.
[player_tooltip player_id="144904" first="Cortland" last="Brownfield"] — 5-9, 140 QB — University Lab
At just 12 years old, the son of Capitol coach Corey Brownfield earned National Youth Player of the Week honors in October 2019 following a 240-yard, five-touchdown passing performance. The younger Brownfield has grown up around many of Baton Rouge’s top athletes his entire life and essentially training to follow the footsteps of quarterbacks such as Zachary stars Lindsey Scott Jr. and Keilon Brown, Madison Prep’s [player_tooltip player_id="127757" first="Zeon" last="Chriss"], Scotlandville’s Levi Lewis and Southern Lab’s Bladrick Veal.
[player_tooltip player_id="144895" first="Carmaro" last="Mayo"] — 5-10, 150 DB — Green Oaks
The long, athletic cornerback attended a high school showcase event in March and looked like somewhat raw, but talented potential diamond-in-the-rough among upperclassman. Turns out he was an eighth-grader with an entire high school career still to develop into a noteworthy prospect when his time does eventually come.
[player_tooltip player_id="144905" first="Keylan" last="Moses"] — 6-1, 215 ATH — University Lab
Dylan Moses was a young star of rare magnitude before even beginning high school. And while his younger brother may not already be gracing the covers of ESPN or other national outlets for his own big potential, Keylan is similarly advanced in his similar development enough to be firmly among the most intriguing prospects to watch as his class arrives to their respective high school campuses.
[player_tooltip player_id="144896" first="Julius" last="Moss"] — 5-8, 165 ATH — Calvary Baptist
The grandson of former LSU star Tony Moss is a tough and explosive athlete already displaying rare levels of understanding of the game, instincts, confidence, work ethic and leadership at such a young age. Playing with older athletes this spring 7-vs-7 season, he was quickly comfortable being the most vocal player on the field for his team.
[player_tooltip player_id="145331" first="Semaj" last="Pierre"] — 5-4, 120 ATH — Catholic (Baton Rouge)
The speedy young athlete has been among the young prospects in his class to catch the attention of older players in southeast Louisiana impressed by his talent at a young age. Most recently, Pierre attended a workout Sunday with a slew of 2021 and college receivers and quarterbacks and held his own throughout.
[player_tooltip player_id="144899" first="Rejohn" last="Zeno"] — 5-10, 170 RB — Jennings
Coach Rusty Phelps may only have one more year with highly touted recruit [player_tooltip player_id="127856" first="Trevor" last="Etienne"], on the heels of older brother Travis Etienne’s record-setting career, but he’s already excited about another young star just joining the program. Zeno already possesses good size and speed for a varsity back and is a strong bet to be among Louisiana’s top prospects as he continues to develop.
