Last week, I broke down the <a href="https://prepredzone.com/2021/05/2022-rankings-reactions-san-diego-players/">players from the San Diego region</a> that made the updated 2022 rankings on Prep Redzone.
Now it’s time to break down the four players who didn’t quite crack the top 200 but made the new Watch List.
[player_tooltip player_id="143113" first="Griffin" last="Grant"] is a big strong safety from Torrey Pines. He is 6-foot-4, 200 pounds and excels in zone coverage. He has excellent closeout speed to the ball which gives him the ability to line up deeper in the backfield and still be able to make plays. As a receiver, he plays in the slot in Torrey Pines offense which has a wide variety of formations and personnel groups, including a variation of a Wing T. Grant has offers from San Diego State and Columbia.

[player_tooltip player_id="25346" first="Tavita" last="Letuli"] is one of the best offensive lineman in the class in San Diego. The Cathedral Catholic big man is 6-foot-2, 320 pounds and was the starting left tackle for the best team in the Section. The Dons often him blocking down on unsuspecting three-technique defensive linemen and linebackers. As a pass blocker, he has quick hands and overpowers most defensive ends and blitzing outside linebackers.
[player_tooltip player_id="143145" first="Elijah" last="Ortiz"] is a quarterback with a lot of upside. He is now at Torrey Pines after playing his sophomore season at Grossmont and a brief offseason stint with Patrick Henry. He is 6-foot-3 and looks comfortable in the pocket. Ortiz works best in the Torrey Pines offense when they open it up and run 11 personnel. When they tighten it up and run 22 personnel he has the ability to make throws on the run.

[player_tooltip player_id="142012" first="Xavier" last="Van"] was the top receiver on a Helix team that was depleted by multiple seniors who opted out of the spring season. He is a very good blocker for a receiver who doesn’t take plays off. He is a good route runner who gets separation and can make plays after the catch. Van doesn’t have Division 1 offers yet but has been talking with Fresno State and Oregon State among others.
