I’ve seen a lot of quality football players this spring and was excited to see Prep Redzone’s updated class of 2022 rankings. The rankings were released this week and here are my thoughts on the players in the San Diego Section on the list, and maybe some guys who are underrated who could be on the list.

[player_tooltip player_id="25238" first="Jalil" last="Tucker"] from Lincoln is the highest-ranked player from San Diego in the rankings and it’s easy to understand why. He has elite speed with a 10.78 100m as a freshman. He became a national recruit last offseason and has offers from a lot of the major schools. Greg Biggins of 247Sports is predicting that Tucker will land at Oregon.

[player_tooltip player_id="25239" first="Gracen" last="Halton"] of St. Augustine could easily have been the top player from San Diego on the list. He’s an elite defensive end who moves incredibly well for a 270 pound guy. He has the power of a lineman and the speed of a linebacker who can stop the outside run game. Halton is committed to Oregon.

Cathedral Catholic defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id="25320" first="Jaxson" last="Moi"] had his stock rise faster than anyone in San Diego this spring. He has 21 offers, 13 of which have come in the year 2021. He played all over the defensive front for the Dons this season in their three-man front. I imagine college scouts see him as a possible three-technique defensive lineman at the next level.

Another Lincoln star [player_tooltip player_id="141879" first="Jahlil" last="Florence"] makes his debut in the updated rankings. He is 6-foot-2, 180 pounds and got an offer from Jackson State last week. He visited Washington recently for the Huskies’ spring game and is approaching 20 offers.

[player_tooltip player_id="141881" first="Zach" last="Rowell"] is new on this list but was a huge oversight on the first edition of the rankings that came out last summer. He is the best player on a very good Torrey Pines team and has seen his stock rise rapidly. He is a big defensive end at 6-foot-5 and 260 pounds. Rowell has 11 offers including Michigan, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA and USC. Some recruiting analysts expect him to commit to Oregon soon.

[player_tooltip player_id="141886" first="Jackson" last="Stratton"] is new to the rankings and is the highest ranked quarterback in the San Diego region, No. 7 overall for the class. Stratton completed 70 percent of his passes and threw 19 touchdowns compared to just two interceptions. He is committed to Washington.

Mt. Carmel’s [player_tooltip player_id="141895" first="Jayden" last="Virgin"] made a name for himself at showcases this winter and had a great spring season for the Sundevils. He caught 22 passes for 468 yards and five touchdowns in just six games. Virgin has no offers yet but has been in contact with Fresno State and San Diego State.

[player_tooltip player_id="25296" first="Rex" last="Haynes"] and [player_tooltip player_id="141906" first="Lucky" last="Sutton"] are two of the top offensive skill players for Cathedral Catholic. Sutton is new to the list but had a breakout spring with 721 yards and six touchdowns in just four games for the Dons. Haynes is one of the best receivers in the region and has offers from Arizona State, Colorado State and San Diego State. Sutton has five offers, four of which are from Mountain West schools.

[player_tooltip player_id="25345" first="Christian" last="Washington"] is ranked No. 124 and is the first player from Helix which is highly unusual. Helix had a depleted roster due to having many seniors who opted out to enroll in college early or just prepare for their freshman seasons. Washington rushed for 702 yards and four touchdowns for the Highlanders this spring but still has no offers.

Eastlake had an incredible spring season en route to a Metro-Mesa league championship. [player_tooltip player_id="141920" first="Treyton" last="White"] was outstanding at outside linebacker with 18 tackles and five sacks in just three games according to MaxPreps. He has offers from Arizona, Columbia and Penn.

[player_tooltip player_id="141930" first="Justin" last="Stearns"] of St. Augustine and [player_tooltip player_id="25319" first="Harmon" last="Savaiinaea"] are two of the top linebackers in San Diego and are new to the rankings. Stearns has offers from New Mexico and Utah State. Savaiinaea has offers from Colorado, Colorado State and Hawaii.

Cathedral Catholic was the best team in San Diego this spring and its quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="141935" first="Charlie" last="Mirer"] got some well-deserved press. He is the son of former NFL quarterback Rick Mirer. The Dons do not ask him to do much so his numbers weren’t gaudy, but he is lengthy and has a big arm.

Two good offensive line prospects made the list: [player_tooltip player_id="141950" first="Luke" last="Bolin"] of St. Augustine and [player_tooltip player_id="141968" first="Jonah" last="Zimmerman"] of Oceanside. Bolin is a tall interior lineman at 6-foot-4 and has room to put on size at 270 pounds without losing his athleticism as a puller. He has an offer from Maryland. Zimmerman is a little bigger at 290 pounds and is also a guard with offers from Air Force and Army.

Here is the list of San Diego schools with the most scholarship offers as of this week: Cathedral Catholic 7 Lincoln 5 Mater Dei Catholic 5 St. Augustine 5
