Forcing turnovers is a hard thing to get done, but these guys were consistent ball hawks all year round. Let’s dive into a few of the biggest standouts to know about moving into the 2021 season.
Ky’yon Harris | 2024 DB | Union
As a freshman, Ky’yon Harris started for a talented Union team. That alone is impressive. What was even more impressive was that he picked off opposing quarterbacks 6 times despite being so young. Harris played a safety role for Union last season and made a huge impact in both the run and pass game. He has good speed and can cover ground quickly. The young safety also has good hips and can read the quarterback’s eyes well. While his production in the air was great, Harris is also physical in run support and tackles extremely well. A nearly complete prospect as a safety at a young age, watch for this guy to dominate in years to come. Harris currently lists no offers, but that will change as time goes on.
Dereco Crosby | 2022 DB | Taylorsville
A two way player at wide receiver and corner, Dereco Crosby hauled in 6 picks last season for Taylorsville. At a listed 5’7″, Crosby plays way bigger than he may appear to be. He has long arms and uses his length to force pass break ups. Crosby has excellent ball skills and times up his interceptions extremely well. He is able to stay in the receivers pocket and break on the ball when it is in the air. This guy is somehow always around the football! Crosby has good twitch as well, which shows off when he makes open field jukes and cuts. Love his production and what he brings to the table athletically. Crosby currently lists an offer from St. Norbert.
Jaylen Aborom | 2023 DB | Oak Grove
With one of his last plays in the season last year being a game sealing pick six in the state championship, Jaylen Aborom made a name for himself in the state of Mississippi. At 6’2″ 185, he has prototypical size for the position. Aborom has long arms and great speed in the open field. He transitions well and breaks easily on the football when it is in the air. The young defensive back took most of his snaps at the safety position last year, but has the frame and athleticism to play anywhere. He is also physical with receivers and will step up and make some big time tackles as well. Love the swagger that he plays with as well. Right now, this is one of the bigger sleepers in the 2023 class. Not sure how he doesn’t have anything going on yet, but that should change by this season.
Chris Davis Chris Davis 5'10" | 170 lbs | DB Wesson | 2023 State MS | 2023 ATH | Wesson
Chris Davis Chris Davis 5'10" | 170 lbs | DB Wesson | 2023 State MS was the do it all guy at Wesson last season. He took sweeps to the house while also catching touchdowns out of the slot. Davis also hauled in 6 picks as a sophomore. It’s easy to see why Wesson leaned on the young playmaker so much too. Davis has great speed and ability to change direction. He can kick it into another gear and outrun anybody on the field. As a defensive back, Davis jumped routes before the receiver would even know what was going on. This guy could easily have some of the best ball skills in the entire 2023 class. Davis currently lists no offers which is quite the surprise. Big time riser in the next rankings update who should add offers soon.
Joe Laster | 2022 DB | Morton
At 6’1″ 215, Joe Laster is an absolute unit on the field. The multisport athlete lined up at a variety of positions last year for Morton. Laster has solid speed and very natural hands. He catches the ball well away from his chest and looks natural after the catch. Laster jumps routes well and has a knack for finding the football at its highest point. He plays physically and can use his size to make some big time collisions on ball carriers. Really like his versatility and athleticism. Laster currently lists no offers. Look for him to have another big time senior season and reap the rewards soon.
