Using a five-part series, we looked at four from each classification who we’ve found can be counted on whether their team is looking to move the football or stop an opponent from doing just that. The final installment is all about Class 1A, where two-way players are the name of the game – but it takes even more to qualify for a list such as this.
Nic Brown Nic Brown 6'4" | 220 lbs | ATH Kingstree | 2023 State SC , DE/WR, C.E. Murray
It’s difficult to label Brown as a two-way starter, because that doesn’t even show his flexibility on both side of the ball. So far, Brown has gotten offensive snaps at a tight end and split out wide as a receiver. Defensively, he flexes between an outside linebacker capable of pursuit and as an edge-rushing defensive end. Already standing 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds has given his team some serious range with him.
Jamarious Lockett Jamarious Lockett 5'10" | 160 lbs | ATH Gray Collegiate | 2024 State SC , DB/WR, Ridge Spring-Monetta
Lockett’s raw athletic ability forced coach Brian Smith to get him on the field as a freshman, and more often than not, Lockett made that gamble work. The 5-foot-10, 160-pound natural cornerback combined his physical skills with some great field vision and showed he wasn’t afraid of sticking his face mask into ball carriers. It’s why he piled up 49 total stops, five TFL, two forced fumbles, 309 rushing yards and three offensive touchdowns.
Quincy Bias Quincy Bias 6'2" | 200 lbs | LB Bamberg-Ehrhardt | 2022 State SC , LB/RB, Bamberg-Ehrhardt
The rising senior is the type of player who gets a lot of personal attention from opposing coordinators on both sides of the ball. Bias the outside linebacker can switch from the type of player crowding the edge of the line to the a different version altogether that drops back in coverage like a safety. When he’s on offense, his 6-foot-2, 200-pound frame makes him an already developed threat to bust tackles and keep the chains moving.
Bryce Washington Bryce Washington 5'11" | 160 lbs | DB Williston-Elko | 2022 State SC , WR/DB Williston-Elko
Washington was second on the Blue Devils’ roster last year in receptions (22), receiving yards (350) and touchdown catches (three). Many of those were a product of his ability to start wide, cut in, weave through traffic and then let his speed do the rest. That vision was apparent from his spot at safety, too, where he was routinely taking advantage of slower receivers trying to replicate what he does so well on offense.
