This included losses to teams such as East Coweta, and Coffee High School, who each had respectable seasons in their own right. As they saw their 2020 season come to a close in the second round of the playoffs, the Panthers can also say that they’ve got a very bright future ahead of them. This is due to the fact that they have plenty of young talent that will be returning in the coming years. Below, you can take a look at a few of their top players that we have listed.
Marc Stampley- S
At 5’11, 170 pounds, Stampley is one of the most instrumental parts of Starr’s Mill’s defense. Not only does he have good ball skills, but he has a natural ability to play the game of football. He understands where the football may be at different points of time, and takes good tackling angles when he comes up to make plays on the ball carrier. Along with this, he also has decent fluidity in his movement skills, which ultimately helps him to be able to move around the field well and to make plays on the ball. This results in pass break ups most commonly, and can often times been seen as a result of his ability to match up well in coverage, and to be able to mirror movement very well. Even though his footwork and hips can be raw at times, we certainly see his upside and have no doubt that he will be a key piece of the team’s defense in 2021.
Brandon Mathis- RB
When watching tape on Mathis, it is clear that he runs well through the line, has a great frontward lean, and that he carries his weight well. As he runs behinds his pads, it makes it harder for opposing defenders to wrap up on him when targeting him high. Mathis also has decent footwork, which is proven by his ability to adjust at the line of scrimmage. While we are not overly excited by his top end speed, we do recognize that the stride that he runs with is very beneficial for him at times. If Mathis can continue to work on his explosiveness, as well as ability to change direction even faster, he will begin to see even more success in the future.
Barrett Schmidkofer- DL
Off of the edge, Barrett is a big bodied player that tends to be a bit much for most offensive linemen to handle. This is often times due to the way he gets his hands on them, and rips off of them when in pursuit of the football. Even though Barrett can play a bit high and stiff at times, there is no denying his ability to engage ball carriers, as well as the passer, and to be able to thoroughly rattle them. He shows flashes of being able to turn the corner, and he also has some explosive ability to his game as well. This can be seen as he lunges to make tackles, and uses his length to make plays in pursuit, the backfield, and seemingly out of reach scenarios.
William Yarbrough- QB
Next season, Yarbrough will hope to continue to build on top of the success that he had in 2020. During that season, not only did he cause problems for opposing defenses with his legs, but he also had a burst, and twitch to his running style that constantly put defenders in a spin cycle. He made some throws outside of the pocket, and even did an okay job of stepping up in the pocket every once in a while as well. While he is very raw in this area and can be seen to be quick to bail, there are plenty of flashes that he shows for the future. His throwing mechanics are a bit raw and inconsistent, but he has decent arm strength and accuracy. This will likely be a key in the team’s passing game, especially if they resort to simpler route concepts underneath. Next season, we hope to see Yarbrough make the jump that we think he can. If so, look for Starr’s Mill to feel like they can rely on him a little more in the passing game.
