Zach Avina, Palm Desert, 2022
Avina is an outside linebacker who can also play defensive end at the high school level. He excels as an edge rusher and is an excellent tackler. He had a stellar game in a 10-7 win against Rancho Mirage, tallying three sacks and a forced fumble. He will need to put on some weight to play at the next level, but he is a gamer who is great to have on your team.

Micah Carreon, Mission Viejo, 2021
Mission Viejo had one of the best pass rushes in the state last season, but lost its three top rushers to graduation. Carreon has stepped up as the elite pass rusher on the Diablos front. He had four sacks and four hurries in a win against San Juan Hills. He is a solid defensive lineman who can play anywhere on the outside or interior. Carreon is signed with Northern Arizona.

Ruben Gamboa, Chaminade, 2024
Gamboa is one of the best freshman defensive players in the state. He is versatile and can play cornerback or safety. As a corner, he can cover guys on the outside or in the slot. His biggest strength is his elite closing speed to the ball. Gamboa had 13 tackles and a pass deflection in a high-profile game against Alemany, where he was covering very good receivers. He will be a fun player to watch for the next three years and will be a Power 5 prospect.

Jonathan Heraz, Holtville, 2021
Holtville had a dominant defensive performance against Mountain Empire last week. The two top players for Holtville were Ryder Merten and Heraz. Heraz had six tackles and a sack for the Vikings. He has 3.5 sacks on the season and 30 tackles. He is a big outside linebacker at 6-foot-6 but could add a few more pounds to play at the next level. He is an outstanding high school player and Holtville’s defense is very good.

[player_tooltip player_id="25207" first="Tyray" last="Odell"], Serra, 2021
O’Dell is a three-year starter for Serra and his experience is evident when you watch him play. He is always in the right spot, is unselfish and a good tackler. He plays sideline-to-sideline which is what college coaches look for in high school outside linebackers. He had 12 tackles and an interception in a big win over Bishop Amat last week. O’Dell is committed to UNLV.

Trey White, Eastlake, 2022
White is a rising prospect who is gaining steam after each game he plays. He is a 6-foot-2, 235 pound junior who is a great pass rusher. Watching him play on Eastlake reminds me of Lavonte David on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He had three sacks and forced fumble in a huge 13-12 win over Mater Dei Catholic last week. White was recently offered by Arizona, his first Pac 12 offer. I expect him to become a national prospect this summer.
