Here are the top players from Region 7 to watch in 2021.
Jacob Gordon | 5-9 RB | Gaylesville HS
Gordon rushed for 449 yards and five touchdowns as a junior last season. Entering 2021, Gordon could become the top running back in the region.
The incoming senior has quick speed and good footwork to elude defenders and pick up a first down. He can turn any negative play into positive rushing yards in any direction on the field.
Hunter Penney | 5-10 WR | Gaylesville HS
Penney was a standout receiver for his school last season. He has good separation off the line of scrimmage and makes the defender compete for a 50/50 ball.
On the outside, Penney can elude a defender and run his route with ease. He is excellent at coming back to the ball and gaining yards after the catch.
Jacob Burleson | 6-2 QB, FS | Cedar Bluff HS
Burleson is an exceptional quarterback with solid arm strength.
The incoming senior can scramble out of the pocket to avoid pressure and can also throw on the run.
His speed allows him to be a dual threat that can confuse a team in multiple ways.
Preston Burt | 5-11 WR, CB | Cedar Bluff HS
Burt could be one of the top receivers in Region 7 this season.
He is great in the run blocking game, especially on the outside. Burt has great hands and can catch any pass thrown his way. His speed allows him to get separation from a defender mid-route to make a stunning reception.
Roger McMahan III | 5-10 MLB | Valley Head HS
McMahan is one of the best underrated linebackers in Class 1A. The junior had a phenomenal season in 2020. He can get into the backfield in a hurry on a blitz package.
But in pass coverage, McMahan covers his area of the field well. He can force a quarterback to look for other open receivers and has the ability to intercept passes that are thrown near him.
Samuel Nix | 5-5 WR | Sumiton Christian
Nix is a terrific receiver that still has two years of high school to prove his skills. The incoming junior could be a highly talked about name through his final two seasons.
Upon watching film, Nix is a prototypical wideout that has quick speed to shift past defenders after the catch.
Jordon Robertson | 6-1 QB, RB | Sumiton Christian
Robertson can play both under center and in the backfield. From a quarterback perspective, he possesses great arm strength and can lead his team down the field with accurate passes.
But on the ground, Robertson has quick speed and viable strength to power through defenders for big gains.
