After reviewing some film, Iv’e come across a good amount of players in 2A that show potential to play at the next level. Here’s a look at 10 players to know before the 2A season:
Matthew McClelland Matthew McClelland 6'2" | 185 lbs | QB Arete Prep | 2022 State AZ , QB/DB, 6’2″ 185lbs, Arete Prep: Dual threat QB who threw for 1,567 yards and 12 TD’s while rushing for another 826 yards and 10 TD’s. Good placement on throws and good speed on the ground for big play ability. Ball hawk ability as a DB and holds a very high football IQ all around.
Gabe Escobedo Gabe Escobedo 6'1" | 165 lbs | WR Miami | 2022 State AZ , WR, 6’1″ 165lbs, Miami HS: The best WR in 2A ball totaled 1,061 yards and 16 TD’s to join the 1,000 yard club as a sophomore. Electric with the ball in his hands with solid top end speed and is a completely mismatch against 2A DB’s.
Cael Stewart Cael Stewart 6'5" | 210 lbs | QB Blue Ridge | 2022 AZ , QB, 6’5″ 210lbs, St. Johns HS: Big framed, pro-style QB that can absolutely sling it. Fluid over the top release with torque to get solid velocity on throws. Transferred in from Miyamura High in New Mexico and will be a monster next season for St. Johns.
Ryan Francione, OL/DL, 6’0″ 185lbs, Benson HS: Undersized on the OL for the next level but is a warrior in the trenches in 2A. On defense, he racked up 6 sacks and was a key player as a junior for Benson. Could potentially transition to LB at the next level, but will be interesting to see how he grows and develops this season.
Gabriel McKenney Gabriel McKenney 6'0" | 180 lbs | RB Arizona Lutheran | 2022 State AZ , RB, 6’0″ 180lbs, Arizona Lutheran Academy: He sizes up with a strong, athletic frame with excellent vision. He displays solid physicality between the tackles and cuts off blocks well to spring loose into the second level. Expect Mkenney to have a big senior season.
Samuel Terpstra, QB, 6’1″ 175lbs, Glendale Prep: Terpstra does a great job keeping his eyes downfield with anticipation to deliver accurate throws. Has the ability to extend plays and is a big time player for Glendale Prep. Expect the game to slow down for him his senior year as he projects to be a breakout player.
Devin Bowling Devin Bowling 5'9" | 170 lbs | ATH Benson | 2022 State AZ , ATH, 5’9″ 165lbs, Benson HS: Big time playmaker on both sides of the ball for Benson, as he racked up 909 yards and 12 TD’s on the ground last season to lead Benson to the state championship, which they lost to Santa Cruz Valley. In a talented 2022 class at Benson, expect to hear Bowling’s name quite often this upcoming season.
Jimmy Lerblance Jimmy Lerblance 5'10" | 160 lbs | WR Benson | 2022 State AZ , DB, 5’10″ 160lbs, Benson HS: Another Benson kid that could be a game changer next season. He’s shown big time ball hawk ability in 2A and will be lock down in the secondary next season. He reads the QB well and seemed to identify routes and concepts which aided in his ball hawk ability. Good ball skills all around and could even be a big player on offense as well.
Wyatt Ogle Wyatt Ogle 5'7" | 145 lbs | ATH Santa Cruz Valley | 2022 State AZ , ATH, Santa Cruz Valley: Ogle has solid position versatility as he can play QB, RB, or DB and be a threat anywhere he lines up. The state champ shows solid play recognition as a DB and was able to pick off 6 passes last year and can be a threat with the ball in his hands as well. Good ball skills all around and will be a very fun player to watch in 2A.
Boden Davidson Boden Davidson 5'10" | 165 lbs | ATH Scottsdale Christian | 2022 State AZ , ATH, 5’10″ 165lbs, Scottsdale Christian Academy: Davidson is a very good all around athlete with solid position versatility. We could possibly see him compete for the QB1 job at SCA, but will be a key player regardless of what position SCA decides to throw him in. Solid speed and is explosive out of cuts, and can potentially be a breakout player next season.
