First year head coach Will Hall picked up his first commitment of the 2022 class in ATH Kenyon Clay Kenyon Clay 6'0" | 210 lbs | RB Union | 2022 State MS . Southern Miss became the third in-state program to add a commitment from one of the state’s best players.
The Golden Eagles are getting a steal in Clay. The do it all athlete put up video game numbers last season as a junior. He passed for 1505 yards and 18 TDs and rushed for 1300 yards and 27 TDs. Clay was a one man wrecking show and will look to cap off his high school career with an even bigger season as a senior.
Clay broke down the decision to commit to Southern Miss early in the process with PrepRedzone.
When the Golden Eagles hired Coach Hall, they knew what they were doing. Hall came to Southern Miss as a true Mississippi guy, graduating from Amory High School before continuing his playing career at North Alabama. Hall is a young and exciting coach who runs a fast paced, high scoring modern day offense. USM has placed a high priority on recruiting the Magnolia State. In his first few months on the job, Hall has made his presence as a recruiter known.
“The coaches made me feel like USM was the place to be! I love it! They were happy that I was on board with them! ” said Clay regarding his decision to commit early.
As for Kenyon Clay Kenyon Clay 6'0" | 210 lbs | RB Union | 2022 State MS , he is all Golden Eagle now.
“I grew up a Mississippi State fan, but USM was always an option to play college ball at! It’s going to be great playing in-state!” said Clay.
As versatile as Clay is, there was always some argument on where he would fit best position wise at the next level. Southern Miss took Clay as a running back, and he will be a great fit for the offense.
Clay stands tall at 6’2″ 215 with a thick lower body that is good for breaking through contact. In Hall’s last season at Tulane as the offensive coordinator, Tulane averaged 217 rushing yards per game. Clay fits the mold of a running back built to thrive. He is a downhill runner with good speed and burst, but can also shed arm tackles and stay upright. To top it off, Clay can make defenders miss in space using his agility. He is one of the state’s most exciting players and will probably see a chance at early play time when he gets to college. Off the field, Clay has decided that he wants to study engineering. Lucky for him, Southern Miss offers some great programs and will give Clay a great degree to pair with his playing experience.
Fans of USM are getting a great player and even better person. In regards of what he wants fans to know, Clay said, “[USM is getting a] exciting football player with exciting game playing!” We can’t wait to watch Clay continue to dominate at the high school level, and it will be even more exciting for him to put on for a home state team. Hopefully Coach Hall will let him throw a few passes at some point too!
