Two major transfers were reported today involving four of the top programs in Southern California.
With the season beginning for some teams in just 9 days, it’s interesting to see that the transfer cycle isn’t stopping.
Class of 2023 quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="25368" first="Carson" last="Conklin"] confirmed to Dan Albano of the Orange County Register that he transferred from Orange Lutheran to Centennial of Corona this past month.
Conklin appeared in 9 games for Orange Lutheran last season, including the team’s playoff game against Long Beach Poly. He threw for 654 yards and 3 touchdowns.
He is 6-foot-1, 180-pounds and has offers from Arizona State and Kansas.
Centennial is expected to start returning senior quarterback Jake Retzlaff. He led the Huskies in passing last season with 1,067 yards and 8 touchdowns.
The Huskies also have sophomore quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="25365" first="Izzy" last="Carter"], who threw seven varsity passes as a freshman last season.
Centennial coach Matt Logan is known for playing multiple quarterbacks over the course of the season and even playing as many as three in a game. Conklin is a better college prospect than Retzlaff and Carter, but he has only had six weeks to learn the playbook. It’s likely we will see all three quarterbacks play this season.
The Huskies will only play fellow Big 8 League teams this season and they typically blowout the other teams in their league so I expect to see all three quarterbacks playing regularly.
Conklin’s transfer means that [player_tooltip player_id="25295" first="Logan" last="Gonzalez"] will be the full time starter at Orange Lutheran. He threw for 954 yards and seven touchdowns as a sophomore for the Lancers last season. He has an offer from Nevada.

The other transfer news of the day involved the Trinity League gaining another elite player.
Defensive tackle [player_tooltip player_id="25244" first="Damonic" last="Williams"] transferred to Santa Margarita from Alemany (Mission Hills).
Williams is one of the top prospects in the 2022 class. He is the third ranked defensive lineman in the state according to Prep Redzone.
He is verbally committed to Cal and was the first prospect in the 2022 class to commit there. Williams wanted to commit early to get the decision out of the way and help convince other recruits to play at Cal.
Williams joins a defensive line at Santa Margarita that features a member of Cal’s 2021 class, [player_tooltip player_id="25042" first="Derek" last="Wilkins"]. Like Williams, Wilkins is the third ranked defensive lineman in the state for his class.
He played the 2019 season at Narbonne (Harbor City) and transferred to Alemany after it was determined that Narbonne would not be eligible for postseason play.
The passing rushing duo of Williams and Wilkins is a huge asset for Santa Margarita and will create matchup problems for many teams.
Santa Margarita, which finished in last place in the Trinity League last season, opens its season against Mayfair on March 12 and then will begin the Trinity League slate against St. John Bosco.
