NEXT-LEVEL PROSPECTS
We take a look at several Wolverines who have had stellar careers and could be noted as next-level prospects.
Trey Sayler Trey Sayler LB Herreid/Selby | 2022 State , FB/LB (2022)
There is not a more dynamic 2022 two-way prospect in the Dakotas than Trey Sayler Trey Sayler LB Herreid/Selby | 2022 State on both sides of the football. Sayler is a bully at linebacker who has an excellent physicality level with his 6’0 205 pound frame. He had over 115 tackles last year with 3 interceptions, 3 forced fumbles, and 4 fumble recoveries A prospect that fills in all the gaps you want from a team leader, as he is very active in the weight room and motivates his teammates to be in there with him. Sayler’s physicality gels nicely at fullback when he hits the A-gap and has the flexibility to run it to the outside or to use his lower body strength to truck over some smaller linebacker he goes up against. He was an All-State fullback as a junior with just 1000 yards rushing, which is an incredible number for a fullback at any level to go with 11 touchdowns. I certainly see Sayler as an asset at the Division II level, if not higher, in the coming years.
Chance Gregg Chance Gregg 6'2" | 245 lbs | DL Herreid/Selby | 2022 State , OL/DL (2022)
I will go ahead and call Gregg “the minister” of both sides of the Wolverines lines. When you watch his tape and scout his measurable, you will be shocked by the burst he has off the line. Gregg assembles everyone’s position on both sides of the ball and has a great football IQ of knowing not just where he needs to line up but his teammates too. Gregg shows off a motor like a truck that just won’t stop running. Gregg is the road grader upfront that paves the way for the Wolverines rushing attack. He has had back-to-back years being named to the All-State team. In my eyes, Gregg would be a solid defensive lineman at the college level. He had nearly 90 tackles as a junior.
Trevor Sayler Trevor Sayler 6'1" | 220 lbs | LB Herreid/Selby | 2022 State AL , LB/TE (2022)
The twin brother of Trey was super active in the opponent’s backfields in 2020. Sayler makes excellent reads and is instinctive with his footwork putting himself in a great position to make plays. He gets outstanding pad level with his tackling ability, all that comes with plenty of physicalities. Like his brother, Sayler stays active in the weight room & is a student of the game when it comes to film study. I have said this on social media, but I would love to see the South Dakota record books for most tackles in a season by a set of brothers, as Trevor & Trey combined for 250 tackles (not a typo) in their junior seasons combined. All-State linebacker as a junior which is where our scouts see him playing at the college level.
Brenden Begeman Brenden Begeman 6'2" | 195 lbs | RB Herreid/Selby | 2023 State , RB/DB (2023)
One of most under the radar players on this roster is sophomore Brenden Begeman Brenden Begeman 6'2" | 195 lbs | RB Herreid/Selby | 2023 State . Make darn sure you watch this kid’s footwork when you watch his film because it’s something I personally have never seen so much of at the 9-man level. His burst is so much quicker than you would expect a tailback of his size to be (6’2 195). A bulldog in my eyes getting yards after contact that logged 22 touchdowns & over 1800 rushing yards in 2020. He’s not just strong offensively either, as he was an All-State defensive back in 2020 and tallied seven interceptions as just a sophomore. My gut is telling me Begeman could be a Division I prospect when it’s all said and done but right now, he is a secret weapon coming out of Herreid-Selby.
Ryan Jochim, OL/NG (2022)
Jochim doesn’t have all that much film, but in the clips, he shows a strong level of physicality on every tackle he makes. He does a fantastic job as a nose guard clogging up the rushing lanes very early on every play. According to one of my sources with the Wolverines, Jochim is looking forward to “making a mess” in the 2021 season with his increased strength he’s gotten this offseason in the weight room!
Tray Hettick Tray Hettick 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB Herreid/Selby | 2023 State , QB/DB (2023)
Hettick is the Wolverines QB1 that has something to improve in 2021. Hettick’s passing percentage was slightly over 50% in 2020, and but I see much improvement in his game in his junior season. Hettick has the ability to scamper out of the pocket, but I would love to see more activity with the use of his legs. Tray has good precision on balls over 15 yards but could use a little development on his shorter throws from an accuracy standpoint. Hettick has also been in the weight room his fair share this offseason. This young man has a lot of potential & a few years to grow into an even better QB1 so don’t be surprised to see Hettick surpass his 18 touchdowns and passing percentage from last season in 2021.
Colin Tisdall, LB (2024)
Tisdall is one of the lone freshmen standouts from last season for the Wolverines. Tisdall has a great attacking ability when going to make a tackle with a strong force, something this entire defense unit excels on. Tisdall is a player, in my eyes, that outplays his measurables. Tisdall, despite being freshmen, gets some solid reads and is learning under one of the best linebacking cores South Dakota has to offer when it comes to a depth standpoint. If Tisdall can grow a couple more inches and increase his already sound strength, this kid will be right up there like the Sayler brothers in his next few years of varsity snaps. A prospect that will 100% be on my next list of rankings coming from the Class of 2024.
Hunter Friend, OL/DL (2023)
Friend has some varsity film for his positions but has already grown in the weight room this offseason to nearly 250 pounds and stands at 6’3, making his measurables an ideal fit for next-level football. Once we see some more film from Friend, I will for sure be giving him a more solid evaluation. Like the rest of the Wolverines defense, Friend has a hit stick he can put on display if needed!
UNDER THE RADAR PROSPECTS
Trevor Gill (2024)
Cole Zabel (2024)
2021 GOALS
I always think asking this question is sometimes repetitive because what coaching staff isn’t going to want to play for the state championship every year? What I loved about the answers the Wolverines gave me was how analytics-based their answers were. For example, the Wolverines last season held their opponents scoreless in 49% of the quarters in 2020, which is a number they want to raise in 2021. Having a game-by-game attitude with stats such as 250 rushing yards a game and defensively, grab 2-3 turnovers every single game are the right goals for the program.
Alumni Coming Back to Their Roots
I always say a good base of growth in a high school football program is that the alumni want to come back and help their younger teammates even after their high school football careers are over. These three Wolverines alumni that have been influential in the weight room, practices, etc. even after their playing days were done at Herreid-Selby:
Clayton Randall II, Class of 2020
Randall II is a freshman at Northern State where he will play defensive back for the Wolves.
Trevor Begeman, Class of 2018
Begeman holds the current record for shot put distance at South Dakota State. The older brother of Brenden Begeman Brenden Begeman 6'2" | 195 lbs | RB Herreid/Selby | 2023 State .
Emmit Bohle, Class of 2018
Bohle was a first-year starter on the Wolves offensive line after playing TE for the
