Week one is in the books and it was so great to see the joy in the players’ faces as they got to play the sport they love after 15 long months.
There were some great games and some lopsided games, just as any opening week has. Well now week two is here and due to the short schedule and limited availability, we are getting matchups we rarely get to see in a normal season.
St. Bernard (Playa del Rey) is a newer school that has played lower level playoff football but has a plethora of transfers thanks to new coach Manny Douglas. Douglas coached Narbonne (Harbor City) to multiple LA City Section championships before resigning after accusations of alleged academic fraud.
Sierra Canyon lost to St. John Bosco last week but played as competitively as any other team in the state would have not named Mater Dei.
We previewed Sierra Canyon last week as well and we will do our best to highlight different players.
Below is a list of players to watch in this star-ridden nonleague game.
[player_tooltip player_id="25229" first="Larry" last="Turner-Gooden"], St. Bernard, 2022
Turner-Gooden recently committed to Arizona State very early in the recruiting process. He is a transfer from Calabasas where he was an elite defensive back and can also play some receiver. He is the No. 7 overall prospect in California’s class of 2022 according to Prep Redzone. There are plenty of elite receivers on Sierra Canyon for Turner-Gooden to cover and showcase his skills.

[player_tooltip player_id="25117" first="Phillippe" last="Wesley"], St. Bernard, 2021
Wesley is a speedy receiver who lacks size but still has a large catch radius. He is a two-sport guy who is a top level sprinter in the 100 and 200 meter. He signed with San Diego State after a recruitment that started out hot but fizzled over time. It is unclear how much the signed seniors will play for St. Bernard since Douglas hinted that this short season is about getting young guys playing time.

[player_tooltip player_id="25151" first="Earnest" last="McDaniel"], St. Bernard, 2021
McDaniel is an unsigned senior I expect we will see a lot of this season. He is a transfer from JSerra (San Juan Capistrano) where he was the leading receiver with 451 yards and three touchdowns. He has extraordinary leaping ability and great hands. McDaniel has offers from Arizona State, Florida Atlantic and Nevada.

Jackson Dadich, St. Bernard, 2021
Dadich is a transfer from Birmingham where he was First Team All-CIF City Section and named to the All-City team by the LA Daily News. He threw for 2,813 yards and 34 touchdowns leading Birmingham to a CIF championship. He will be the starting quarterback for St. Bernard but they will also play freshmen [player_tooltip player_id="115447" first="Darius" last="Curry"] and [player_tooltip player_id="115452" first="Jason" last="Mitchell"]. He has an offer from Graceland University.

[player_tooltip player_id="25131" first="Siale" last="Suliafu"], St. Bernard, 2021
Another transfer from JSerra who will make an impact for St. Bernard. He had 12 tackles for a loss for JSerra last season with 3.5 sacks and was named All-Trinity League. He is 6-feet tall and 280 pounds with good pass rush moves. He can play either nose tackle or three-technique effectively at the next level. He is signed with Missouri State.

[player_tooltip player_id="25136" first="New" last="Zealand Williams"], St. Bernard, 2021
Guess what! Another St. Bernard player who transferred from JSerra. Williams was named All-County by the Orange County Register last season when he had 72 tackles and three interceptions for the Lions. He excels in zone coverage but can play man-to-man as well. He covers large portions of the field, has good instincts and can catch as well. Williams is signed with San Diego State.

Anthony Spearman, Sierra Canyon, 2021
He isn’t a high-level college prospect but Spearman looked sharp against St. John Bosco in the Trailblazers’ season opener. He transferred to Sierra Canyon from Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks). He rushed for 120 yards on 13 carries including a 44-yard run. He has good field vision and commits when he sees an opening.

Caden Harman, Sierra Canyon, 2022
Harman was named defensive player of the game by the Sierra Canyon coaching staff and they have been high on him all offseason. He led the team in sacks as a sophomore and has put on a ton of muscle. He held his own against USC-signee [player_tooltip player_id="25067" first="Maximus" last="Gibbs"] and was frequently in the backfield.

[player_tooltip player_id="25230" first="Kamari" last="Ramsey"], Sierra Canyon, 2022
Ramsey looked good at safety in the season opener and prevented Bosco from making huge plays in the passing game. Most of Bosco’s successful plays came after the pocket broke down and it was a scramble drill. He covers so much of the field and can tackle better than most safeties. He is one of the best safety prospects in the nation and was wearing USC gloves in the game last week.

Angelo Pulido, Sierra Canyon, 2022
Pulido lined up all over the field for the Trailblazers in the season opener and made some big plays. He isn’t afraid to come up into the box and lay some big hits. He made a huge fumble recovery when the game was tied in the second quarter. Pulido is being recruited by Ivy League schools like Columbia, Harvard and Yale.
