The novelty of having football back in the spring wore off in week two and now people are ready to take a deep look at these games instead of just being happy to be watching the sport.
As I mentioned earlier, quarterbacks put up big numbers in week two and the receivers benefitted greatly from it. Plenty of receivers had big nights last week.
Here were the top passing performances in week two.
Here were the top rushing performances in week two.
Below are six of the top receiving performances in week two. There were a lot of honorable mentions because it was such a successful week.
[player_tooltip player_id="25046" first="Mavin" last="Anderson"], Mission Viejo, 2021
Anderson is one of the few Pac 12 signees in Orange County who is playing in this short spring season and the Diablos are happy to have him. The Cal signee caught six passes for 161 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Mission Viejo’s dominant win over Oak Hills of Hesperia. He is very fast and a possible 10.5 100 meter track guy which is remarkable for a guy close to 200 pounds. Cal is getting a possible three or four year starter.

Raymond Casillas, Orange, 2022
Casillas is small but has breakaway speed and great field vision. He was angry that he was left of the OC Register’s Top 150 players list and made a statement in the Panthers’ 40-9 win over La Mirada. Casillas caught seven passes for a school-record 264 yards with four touchdowns. He is only 5-foot-8 and around 150 pounds but he will have another year in the weight room and his speed can play at any level.

Hunter Girch, Saugus, 2021
The Saugus offense had a big game in a win over league rival Canyon Country. Girch and fellow receiver Anthony Marchione had massive games. Girch caught five passes for 107 yards and three touchdowns. One of the touchdowns came on a trick play from Sebastian Dallaire. Saugus plays Foothill League rival Hart this week and Girch will certainly get a lot of targets.

Malachi Keels, Orange Glen, 2022
The Orange Glen offense is one of the most prolific in the San Diego area and Keels has been a major reason for that. The junior caught 10 passes for 300 yards and three touchdowns in a win over University City. He is on pace to eclipse 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns even in this shortened season.

[player_tooltip player_id="35436" first="Matthew" last="Morrell"], Cypress, 2023
Cypress was a CIF finalist last season despite lacking a dangerous passing game. Well this season Cypress has a receiver who may be an elite prospect in Morrell. Morrell transferred to Cypress from Orange Lutheran. He caught 9 passes for a school-record 264 yards and three touchdowns in the Centurions’ win over Empire League foe Valencia.

Braden Pegan, San Juan Hills, 2022
Pegan had a big offseason at camps and with club football and that success carried onto the field last week. The junior caught five passes for 188 yards and a touchdown. He also had an 84-yard kick return for a touchdown in the Stallions’ win over El Toro. Since the game, Pegan has picked up offers from Utah, Columbia and UNLV. I expect Pegan to become a major prospect with double-digit offers by the end of the summer.
