When game-planning to face off with the Warriors of Pontotoc the first thing opposing coaches will notice is the strength in the secondary. Led in the back end of the defense by the reigning Region 2-4A defensive MVP in [player_tooltip player_id="104534" first="Jordan" last="Ball"] and another 4A 1st team All-State member in [player_tooltip player_id="107038" first="Nic" last="Townsend"] , Pontotoc should feel good about where they are at on the defensive end.
Coming off of a 10-2 campaign in 2020 which also saw a Region 2-4A championship, Coach Jeff Carter again will look for his defense to lead the way in 2021. Two potential Division 1 prospects in the secondary certainly will help in that regard.
In [player_tooltip player_id="104534" first="Jordan" last="Ball"] you find a DB who most likely will be a Strong Safety at the next level. Good overall physical makeup with length and room to add muscle/bulk. Ball has FBS level speed with a burst of acceleration to match. Good range at the back of the defense combined with well above average tackling skills and technique make him a very intriguing prospect. Ball sees the field as well as any 2022 DB in state that we have evaluated so far. Seldom do you find the Pontotoc safety out of position. Ball was one of the best safety’s in 4A football last year as a junior and one should expect him to only improve on that during his senior season. Ball consistently lists 40 times in the 4.5 range which makes him very attractive at the next level.
Don’t be surprised to look up a year from now and see 2023 CB prospect [player_tooltip player_id="107038" first="Nic" last="Townsend"] as the top player at that position in the state. At 6"0, 155lb, Townsend has prototypical CB size and has impressive strength for his size. The Pontotoc DB burst onto the scene as a Sophomore quickly becoming one of the most talented corners in the state. Natural and smooth athleticism is present and occurs fluidly. Elite feet. Townsend wins currently due to being a better athlete than 99% of his opponents, but as his technique is refined and he adds experience his game will only improve. I expect to see big time offers coming in the near future here.
If Pontotoc wants to repeat the success from 2020 look for it to start on the defensive side of the ball with their dynamic secondary led by [player_tooltip player_id="104534" first="Jordan" last="Ball"] and [player_tooltip player_id="107038" first="Nic" last="Townsend"] .
