Not only did they finish with an underwhelming 7-5 overall record, but they finished 5-1 in their region. As the season progressed, even with the inconsistent success they had during the season, it was not enough to save them in the playoffs, as they fell to Jones County in the second round of the playoffs. This game resulted in a final score of 34-13, and will likely be one of the driving factors this off-season that will contribute to any potential success that the team may experience during the 2021 season. Along with this, there will be a large amount of impact players that will be returning, or who will see more playing time for the team this upcoming season. Below, we listed a few of our favorite prospects from the team’s roster who we think will have a big impact on the team as well. Feel free to check them out if you have some time. We doubt that you’ll be disappointed.
Donovan Westmoreland Donovan Westmoreland 6'3" | 205 lbs | LB Griffin | 2022 State GA – LB
Westmoreland, a 4 star UGA commit, consistently shows why he is deserving of such honor and praise. He not only has great length, size and frame for an outside backer, but he moves very well and flies around the football field. His movement is very fluid, and he has good sink and bend in his stance, and when he looks to change direction. Not only does he accelerate well out of his breaks, but he also does a good job of using his hips when making contact. Westmoreland does a good job with his drop step as well, and is often times very consistent in how he approaches each play. He has limited wasted movement, and comes downhill well. While some angles he may take can be seen to be a bit questionable at times, we like his overall ability to be fearless at the point of attack, and the fact that he will use his hands to get the job done as well. Moving forward, we would love to see him continue to make big plays in pursuit, and to be able to improve in his ability to cover as well.
Jeff Davis- QB
Davis, who has gained a ton of attention from Georgia high school football fans, is worth all of the hype going into his sophomore year. Not only does he measure in at 6’3, 190, but his talent at the QB position is great for his age. To start, Davis does a good job of getting the ball out quick, and he also has great accuracy with a majority of his throws. While his footwork can be a bit choppy at times, he does play with a decent base, and also does a good job of squaring his shoulders, which eliminates unnecessary rise and fall in his throwing mechanics at times, and allows him to drive the football into windows, and positions accurately. Davis does a good job with intermediate passes, and also has good velocity and touch on his passes. One thing we would like to see Davis do is to be more consistent in his release when throwing various kinds of passes. If he can work on this, he will certainly see improvement to his game, even though he will likely have a strong 2021 season either way. Next season, look for him to take the leap, and to become a big time player for Griffin’s team.
Denorris Fuller- RB
When evaluating Fuller, one of the first things that come to mind is that he has a great bulky, and muscular frame for a RB his age. In fact, he tends to utilize this to his advantage, as he can be seen to have a bulky, and strong running style. Paired with this, he also has a good burst, and explosive lower body when running through the hole. The strength of his style of play comes in his ability to make short gains, and to carry his weight well when slashing through the line. With this, it should also be noted that Fuller is quick, but not overly fast. He has the quick sudden step to dodge an initial tackle, but does not have the overall twitch and speed to take it to the house every time. Along with this, Fuller does not have the best balance, which can be seen as a weakness to his game. Going into next season, we would like to see him improve in this area, and would also love to see how he can adjust to more carries.
Jacob Hammonds- OLB
Hammonds, who may be a little more under the radar for many people, has a high ceiling entering into next season as a 2022 prospect. To begin with, he already saw a large amount of playing time this past season, and also has a decent size, length, and frame for his age. Not only does this help him a ton when making contact with offensive play-makers, but it also helps him to be able to expand his radius of reach when attempting to make tackles. While his reads the backfield well when there’s a run, he also plays a very reactionary style of football, which can help him a good bit in some instances, but can also be detrimental when playing against more advanced competition. Regardless of this, when he goes to make plays, he does a good job of wrapping up, and also seems to be able to make plays in pursuit as well. Even though he plays a bit high and stiff at times, the sky is the limit for his potential if he can work on the fluidity in his movement, as well as his sink and bend.
