FARGO, ND-- We have poled thru as much wide receiver film as we possibly could to build our Fargo City Rankings, the wide receiver edition. We look over the film from the following football programs to develop our top five wide receivers: West Fargo, West Fargo Sheyenne, Fargo South, Fargo North, Fargo Shanley, Fargo Davies, and Oak Grove Lutheran. THE TOP 5 WRS IN FARGO (in order from 5-1) 5: Jack Korbel, Fargo South (2022) The #5 WR in the city of Fargo is Jack Korbel of the Bruins. Korbel is a fearless wide receiver that won’t be afraid to take the ball over the middle of the field. With that being said, he’ll need to develop a better twitch in his hips to get separation easier towards the middle of the field. His burst off the line is solid, but he needs more speed on his routes from after the take-off to move up some spots on our list. I project Korbel as a defensive back at the next level as his film pushes that angle hard. Good measurables as he stands right at 6’0. Junior Tape 4: Trevon Rodriguez, Oak Grove Lutheran (2022) Rodriguez was a late addition to this list, but the more film I watched, the more I was impressed with his game. In comparison to Korbel, Rodriguez has better footwork when it comes to going up the middle of the field and combines great take-off speed with good longevity on that speed in his routes. Rodriguez also brings more versatility on offense besides just going for deep balls for the Grovers. Rodriguez has been given the tools to maneuver around the offense as a capable wing-back due to his speed. Not as big as our #5 WR but offers many more assets to his game in my eyes. Tape vs. Sargent County 3: [player_tooltip player_id="77517" first="Carson" last="Shultis"], Fargo North (2022) The 3/2 ranking for wide receivers in Fargo was the absolute toughest comparison to make, and I think these two could flip-flop depending on their senior seasons, but for now, I have Fargo North’s [player_tooltip player_id="77517" first="Carson" last="Shultis"] in the #3 spot. Shultis is a wide receiver for the Spartans; you can line up just about anywhere and have success as he’s a strong-sized possession wide receiver (6’2, 185). I feel that Shultis can develop a quicker initial step off the line this offseason and move into the #2 spot. For as big of a frame as he has, he has good footwork on his stop routes, and in my eyes, if he can get more dig in his feet, he can get even better. Shultis does a phenomenal job getting separation from the defensive backs. The biggest difference between Shultis and our #2 WR is the types of catches that are made on film as Shultis, in my eyes, needs more contested balls thrown his way to dive into the #2 spot. Jr. Tape 2: [player_tooltip player_id="56468" first="John" last="Gores"], Fargo Shanley (2022) Our #2 Fargo wide receiver may be one of the smallest WRs on this list, but he’s one of the most electric players in Fargo and for the Deacons. The biggest thing I loved when watching Gore’s film was how well he competes against cornerbacks that may outsize him but will not outrun him. He shows off a great extension ability when going up against the highly contest balls thrown his way. Gores has a fantastic burst when he sees a lane he likes and is one of the fastest prospects I have seen at this position in the city of Fargo. Gores is a more versatile version of Rodriguez as he can crush it in the receiving core, in the backfield, and the Beacons secondary. He logged nearly 1000 all-purpose yards as a junior & was 2nd Team All-State. I project Gores as a shifty slot receiver at the next level and one that will do some damage in the return game as well. Jr. Tape 1: [player_tooltip player_id="56453" first="Carson" last="Hegerle"], West Fargo (2022) I didn’t even have to think twice by making Hegerle the #1 wide receiver in the city of Fargo, as this kid can absolutely do it all. Hegerle not only has dynamite speed but has some excellent footwork; he can burn defenders constantly on his routes. He also has a mega-long reach make any ball that comes his way catchable. Even if the ball isn’t coming his way, his effort stays the same, as he’s a fearless competitor that is not afraid to lay a defender on the deck. His stamina level is off the charts, and his motor is exceptional no matter what position he is playing on the football field. He does a fine job of adjusting his routes even on underthrown or passes that might be just off the mark. Hegerle has some of the best speed/size ratios across the entirety of the Dakotas and probably the Midwest for his position. It’s easy to tell Carson plays with 110% juice every single play. He also has an outstanding vertical and has plenty of dunks to show for on his basketball film. He uses that same juice on defense as his vision is second to none from anyone I have seen at defensive back. He even showed off a solid kicking leg on film that showed plenty of range & great hangtime. Hegerle is the Dakotas most sought out prospect at the moment with seven Division I offers. He has yet to get his first power five offer, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see that come very soon from this young man. Jr. Tape
