The typical sophomore season is an in-between season for many Kansas Student-Athletes, especially at larger schools. Players often split snaps between varsity and junior varsity games.
Here is a look at five members of the Class of 2023 who made the most of their varsity snaps in 2020.
Khai Cosner, 5’6”, 135, Holcomb – Holcomb has young raw talent in Cosner. He rushed for 401 yards in his sophomore season and scored five touchdowns on the ground. He is a strong young man, who can, and will need to get stronger to improve his recruitment status. He also plays linebacker and finished with 38 tackles for the Longhorns.
Trystan Stambaugh, 6’1”, 185, Smoky Valley – Stambaugh rushed for 431 yards in his sophomore campaign. He has a big frame and could end up moving positions in high school and for a college program. He has good speed and soft hands. He could move to tight end, wideout, or continue to play running back. The bottom line with Stambaugh is, he is a football player.
Kade Blanchet, 6’4”, 180, Smoky Valley – Like his teammate Stambaugh, Blanchet has a high ceiling, but an undetermined position. The Smoky Valley talent rushed for 292 yards in his sophomore season and scored three touchdowns. His best game came against Hillsboro in which he rushed for 89 yards and two scores. He is taller and bigger than Stambaugh. The Viking coaching staff will have some interesting choices to make in 2021 and beyond determining how to utilize these two Class of 2023 athletes.
Jayden Fletcher, 5’16”, 165, Holton – Holton had a stacked backfield in 2020 so it is impressive that Fletcher got any varsity carries at all during his sophomore season. Fletcher did get 33 carries and rushed for 219 yards for the Wildcats. He scored four touchdowns with limited touches. Holton is a program that produces solid running backs and Fletcher could be next in line.
Rook Williams, 6’3”, 175, Marysville – Williams is a young quarterback who has a great football frame, but little varsity exposure. He rushed for 186 yards with half of those coming in one game. He completed 3-of-5 pass attempts in limited varsity snaps. Williams is a young talent who will be interesting to watch grow and evolve.
