Picking winners and losers from National Signing Day is a favorite pastime of many recruiting analysts.
Here in New Mexico, there’s little doubt concerning the winner on the first Wednesday in February, opening day of the traditional signing period.
Eastern New Mexico.
Head coach Kelley Lee and the Greyhounds signed 11 prospects from the Land of Enchantment, including dynamic Las Cruces quarterback <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="26160" first="Marcos" last="Lopez"]</strong>, a pair of Goddard standouts (DE <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="26170" first="Fernando" last="Rubio"]</strong> and WR <strong>Nathanial Stone</strong>) and Centennial DB <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="26168" first="Karsten" last="Rueckner"]</strong>.
ENMU also signed Melrose WR <strong>Devon Bailey</strong>, the top player in the 8-man football classification, OL <strong>Darrius Gregory</strong> (Rio Rancho), OL <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="26192" first="Christian" last="Griego"]</strong> (Los Lunas), DL <strong>Sean Ivy</strong> (West Las Vegas), DB <strong>Talon Sanders</strong> (Roswell) and a pair of running backs from West Mesa (<strong>Ja’Calvin Newsom</strong>, <strong>Joseph Thompson</strong>).
“This year was harder than usual recruiting New Mexico players because they didn’t get to play their senior year,” Lee told Prep Redzone New Mexico Wednesday night. “Usually, there are some guys that emerge as seniors. But without that film, we had to rely on junior years.
“For the guys we signed, we felt there was enough there to make us confident they could play at this level. We’re very excited about the guys from New Mexico that we got. There are some really good players in that group.”
Another Wednesday winner – Fort Lewis College in Durango, Co. Bernalillo LB <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="26210" first="Ayden" last="Madrid"]</strong>, the state’s ingle season record holder for most tackles, signed with FLC along with Grants LB <strong>Cyler Aragon</strong>. Wednesday night, Capital running back <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="26186" first="Luke" last="Padilla"]</strong>, the top player in Santa Fe, announced his commitment to Fort Lewis.
Silver quarterback <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="26201" first="Walker" last="Wenzel"]</strong>, one of the top dual threat signal callers in the state, signed with Western New Mexico. Clovis OL <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="26203" first="Johnny" last="Jimenez"]</strong> plans to sign with WNMU on Thursday.
The University of New Mexico didn’t sign any local prospects Wednesday, but they managed to pull off a Traditional Signing Day Eve surprise by offering a pair of 2021 Clovis standouts: RB [player_tooltip player_id="26162" first="Jeston" last="Webskowski"] and LB [player_tooltip player_id="26219" first="Ernesto" last="Acuna"]. Both players are verbally committed to Eastern New Mexico, but those plans could be on hold. Webskowski was also offered by several FCS schools, including Northern Arizona, Incarnate Word, Abilene Christian and Montana.
