A state championship would have been great, but without that opportunity, an undefeated and mostly unchallenged season will have to do. The best player on possibly the best team in Class A was the two-way star, Teigan Martin Teigan Martin 6'6" | 220 lbs | TE Mayer Lutheran | 2022 State MN . Soon, he will be likely be roaming the gridiron for a Division I program.
“(The season) was an amazing time,” the junior said. “Even as seventh graders, we played with the eighth graders. As a junior, we were back with that same class. Having that much history and playing with the same group of guys for so long that made us as dominant as we were. It was great to be back on the field with that same team. It was a great ride this year.”
Defensively, the Crusaders posted three shutouts and didn’t allow more than one touchdown in any game.
“We had a dominate defensive line, and we had lockdown cornerbacks,” Martin explained. “They had a lot of picks this season and played really well. We didn’t have a weak spot offenses could try to exploit.”
They didn’t need many points on offense, but they got them – scoring at least 33 points in every game.
“On offense, we had two great halfbacks. One of them was pure speed and explosive, and the other back was quick and could make people miss. That kept us balanced in the running game. With me at tight end, it drew a lot of attention and opened up our other options.”
Martin has been the starting at tight end since the beginning of his sophomore year.
“I am fast and agile for my size. I am a basketball player too – so that helps. I am quick on my feet and am confident I can win any type of high ball. Over the past year, I put on about 25 pounds. That made me a force in the running game. I also can split out wide, which made it more difficult to double and triple-team me.”
Half-way through his sophomore season, Martin became a full-time, two-way starter.
“I play defensive tackle – usually on the left side or the strong side. I have quick feet and have good hands. I can make explosive moves to get blockers off me. I think I had four sacks.”
The junior expects to have an even more prominent role – especially on offense – next year. With all Mayer Lutheran’s graduations on the offensive line, Martin expects to play some tackle and tight end as a senior. Still expecting to be primarily a tight end, his offseason focus will reflect his long-time position.
“I am going to be working on my route running and my feet,” Martin – who likes to be on a lake and ride dirt bikes – said. “On defense, I will work on my hands.”
Although he works out at least two times a week, his primary focus in the winter is basketball.
“We are 8-0 and have had some strong wins over some good conference teams,” Martin told prepredzonemn.com. “My primary role is to be an all-around scorer. I average about 22 points a game. After I start drawing double teams, I start becoming a presence in the post to get blocks, rebounds and become a passer on offense.”
“After basketball season, I plan on working out six days a week,” Martin continued. “I want to work on building my strength and explosiveness and pack on the weight.”
Martian has offers in both his sports.
“Recruiting has been a cool experience. I have always wanted to be in this spot. It is a dream come true. I have an offer from Iowa State for football and an offer from Western Illinois in basketball. I have had contact with Notre Dame, South Dakota, Iowa, and Central Michigan on the football side. I have talked in person with Rutgers – I have loved talking to them. I have also talked to North Dakota State and will be doing a phone call with Liberty University.”
Martin is being recruited as a tight end and feels he has a better chance to play at the next level in football.
“I am leaning a lot towards football. I am 6’7″ and 215 pounds. I am tall on the football field, but on the basketball court, I would have to grow a few more inches to play the spot I play in high school. I feel I have a chance to play at a higher level in football.”
“They like my size and frame,” Martin concluded. “They have told me I have great hands. They like my ability to spread the field. I can play tight end, slot, or wide receiver.”
He can play multiple positions and, as time goes by, will have multiple offers to prove he can play those multiple positions.
