The ability to attack pass protection in different variations is important, whether it’s a speed rush, or a power rush the ability to mix it up against opposing offensive lineman to keep them off balance. While rushing the quarterback is important, the ability to stack and shed blocks and control the opposing run game is also an important key quality of the position. Here are five 2022 defensive ends from the state of Florida to keep an eye on!
Elijah Russell 6-8 225 Forest High School
A tall athletic edge rusher that uses his length to create separation from offensive tackle’s and can stack and shed blocks quickly and effectively. He gains a lot of ground on his first step off the line of scrimmage and has good closing speed to track down the quarterback. He excels at stunts and uses his speed to get a vertical push upfield to cause pressure.
Ja’veon Mobley 6-7 240 Escambia High School
A versatile dynamic defensive end that has good awareness which allows him to quickly diagnose plays while controlling the offensive lineman in front of him. He is physical at the point of attack and reacts quickly to set the edge and turn back running plays back inside, shows to have a good strike and active hand usage as well. He has a good arsenal of pass rush moves that he uses effectively, flashes a speed to power move as well.
Venson Sneed 6-5 255 Winter Park High School
The keyword to describe Sneed would be “Powerful” he demonstrates the ability to shock offensive tackles at the line of scrimmage and use his strength to shed blocks quickly. He demonstrates when rushing the quarterback, as he accelerates off blocks and can adjust his path at getting to the quarterback.
Bradley Mann 6-6 230 Episcopal School of Jacksonville
An athletic twitchy defensive end that has a quick explosive step off the line and has active violent hands when disengaging blocks to make key plays in the opposing offense’s backfield. He is very active and plays with a high motor and demonstrates the correct angle when in pursuit of the ball carrier.
Shanard Lo-Ray 6-3 240 Monarch High School
An absolute explosive edge rusher that generates power by being able to get low and unlock his hips with force to disengage opposing offensive tackles. He demonstrates the ability to bend and close in tight on a pass rush and show good closing speed rushing the quarterback.
