Here are a few 2023 defensive lineman from North Georgia to keep an eye on in 2021…
Leebeus Overton – Milton
Arguably the top overall defensive lineman in the state, the elite 2023 defensive end is a special talent with 5-stars written all over him. The Milton native plays about 30 miles north of Atlanta and is already one of the nation’s top prospects in his class. He has an ideal frame at the moment at 6-foot-4 245-pounds who can really disrupt any type pass protection. He holds the edge well and is excellent against the run as well, but Overton is an absolute sack machine with no limit on his potential. He is a two-sport star who dominates on the basketball court for the Eagles when he’s not dominating opposing offensive lineman. Overton had an incredible sophomore season last fall where he recorded a state-leading 21.5 sacks. He’s exactly what you look for in a defensive end at the next level and could push to be the No.1 overall prospect across the country in the 2023 class.
Chris Herock – North Forsyth
Forsyth County, located about 40 miles north of Atlanta, has become a hotbed for talent in recent years. In North Forsyth is where you’ll find sophomore Chris Herock, who quickly became one of the toughest defensive lineman to handle in the entire region in 2020. The 6-foot-1 260-pounds is a freak in the weight room and as strong as an ox, benching over 300 pounds and squatting over 500 pounds as a sophomore. He made a big impact last year as an underclassman playing in 7A, totaling 30 tackles and 7 TFLs. He knows how to get after the passer and led the team with 5 sacks on the season while adding 15 QB hurries. He’s quick off the ball and knows how to blow up a play in a hurry. He’s absolutely a young defensive lineman to know in the area and in 7A Region 6.
Kayden McDonald Kayden McDonald 6'0" | 290 lbs | DL North Gwinnett | 2023 State GA – North Gwinnett
Arguably the best 2023 defensive lineman in the entire state, the big 6-foot-3 325-pounder bursted onto the scene last year as a sophomore and was tough to handle for just about every opponent last season. He’s a massive underclassmen who is only going to get better as he develops his body in the weight room over the next few years. He was a run-stuffing machine for the Bulldogs who had one of the top defenses in the region. He’s very quick for his size and uses his size and strength to his advantage. He already holds offers from Georgia, Michigan State, and Tennessee with more likely on the way. As a sophomore playing against elite competition just about every week, McDonald was able to make 56 tackles and an incredible 29 TFLs. He also added 12 sacks and is headed for another monster season as a junior this fall.
Tyler Ferro – Apalachee
Up in Barrow County is where you’ll find one of the top defensive linemen in the Athens area. The 6-5 275-pounder has the natural ability to get off blocks and was named 2nd-team All-Region last fall. He missed four games last year due to Covid restrictions but is expected to take the next step and grow into a leadership role in 2021. He has a ton of raw potential and is getting better every time he hits the field. He’s a guy that other teams have to scheme to block, and that’s always a recipe for disaster for opposing offenses.
