From Sumter to the west side of Lexington County, the central pocket of the state produces battle-tested players who are cutting their teeth just about every game. In six parts, we broke down all of them and what we loved about their games.
This is a list you don’t want to miss.
Jabari Tiller Jabari Tiller 6'0" | 185 lbs | DB Sumter | 2022 State SCSchool: Sumter
Position: Defensive back
Analysis: At 6-feet and 185 pounds, Tiller is certainly built for the free safety position that elicited a couple interceptions and a fumble recovery. But don’t discount his tackling, either.
Chase Sweigart Chase Sweigart 6'6" | 300 lbs | OL Chapin | 2022 State SCSchool: Chapin
Position: Offensive line
Analysis: The 6-foot-6, 300-pound tackle isn’t just some lumbering lineman. He pulls extremely well and is a huge reason (pun intended) that Chapin’s offense is so dynamic.
Derrick Prince Derrick Prince 6'0" | 225 lbs | LB Crestwood | 2022 State SCSchool: Crestwood
Position: Linebacker
Analysis: Prince is a tenacious hitter, using all of his 225 pounds to take out whatever is in front of him. He led the Knights in stops and was second in tackles for loss last year.
RUSSELL BRUNSON JR.
School: Gray Collegiate
Position: Defensive back
Analysis: Brunson had some gaudy stats in 2020, including five interceptions and 15 pass break-ups. It’s safe to say his 6-foot-2 frame is paying dividends.
Joshua Smith Joshua Smith 6'1" | 185 lbs | DB Dreher | 2022 State SCSchool: Dreher
Position: Defensive back
Analysis: Smith is a sure-tackling linebacker at Dreher. He moves laterally better than most and is very good at closing the gaps. He would be dangerous as a college safety.
