2020 was the year of the quarterback in state of Georgia.
5-star senior QB [player_tooltip player_id="33652" first="Brock" last="Vandagriff"] lead his Prince Avenue Wolverines to their first state championship in school history and is off to Athens to play for the Bulldogs. The state also produced seniors [player_tooltip player_id="33684" first="Carlos" last="Del Rio"] (Florida), [player_tooltip player_id="33673" first="Aaron" last="McLaughlin"] (NC State), [player_tooltip player_id="33686" first="Colten" last="Gauthier"] (South Carolina), [player_tooltip player_id="33671" first="Bubba" last="Chandler"] (Clemson), and Jake Garcia (Miami).
The 2022 class is also promising, led by another 5-star QB in Rabun County’s [player_tooltip player_id="33862" first="Gunner" last="Stockton"]. The dual-threat gunslinger is a true playmaker and one of the top 2022 prospects in the nation. Stockton is currently committed to South Carolina and new head coach Shane Beamer. Gwinnett County native [player_tooltip player_id="33893" first="Sam" last="Horn"] is coming off a great junior season after leading Collins Hill to the 7A state championship game. Horn holds offers from Tennessee, Missouri, Michigan State, among others. The class of 2022 also includes Pace Academy’s MJ Morris, Lowndes’ Jaccuri Brown, and Cherokee star AJ Swann.
So the peach state will be pumping out multiple Power 5 QBs over the next few years, adding to an already impressive list that consists on Deshaun Watson, Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, and many more.
As good as the QB classes of 2021 and 2022 were, there were plenty of sophomores across the peach state this year who made a names for themselves.
The first is North Cobb (GA) star [player_tooltip player_id="34008" first="Malachi" last="Singleton"]. The 6-foot-2 215-pounder from Kennesaw led the Warriors to an incredible season where they went 10-2 with big wins over Buford, Walton, Hillgrove, and Marietta. Singleton looks like a young Justin Fields with his strong arm and ability to make plays with his legs. Singleton passed for 2,710 yards last year with 32 TDs. He was named Region 3 Offensive Player of the Year as a sophomore, which led to offers from Georgia, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, among others.
Another 2023 QB who had a breakout season last fall was Westlake (GA) stud RJ Johnson. The 6-foot-2 190-pound dual-threat QB was a QB to know coming into the season, and he could see offers coming his way from programs across the country after leading the Lions to a 11-2 record. Johnson threw for 3,197 yards and 27 TDs while only throwing four interceptions. He also carried the ball 42 times for 305 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
2023 QB [player_tooltip player_id="34009" first="Dylan" last="Lonergan"] is also a prospect to know for the future. The 6-foot-1 195-pound dual-sport star faced some of the state’s toughest defenses in 2020 and still had a great year for the Brookwood Broncos. In 8 games, Lonergan threw for 2,237 yards and 20 TDs. He also showed his athleticism and ability to run. After just two seasons of high school ball, Lonergan has earned offers from Georgia, Florida, LSU, Penn State, Auburn, among others.
A new 2023 QB in Gwinnett County to know is Central Gwinnett’s Justin Johnson. He started a few games a s a freshman, but really broke out as a sophomore in 2023, rushing and passing for a combined 2,655 yards and 17 TDs in just 10 games. It was a terrible year overall for Central Gwinnett, but Johnson was a bright spot for the team and has the potential to have a another great year this fall.
