Not only do Safety’s and DB’s hold a ton of responsibility in defending the passing game, but they can be seen as the biggest line of defense when the ball is in the air, and heading towards the intended receiver. Along with this, not only is it difficult to earn playing time at this position as it is, but seeing time on the field as a younger player is even more difficult due to the physical intangibles needed to play the position. Due to this, players that see time at this position at a young age typically end up being big time recruits, and others end up going unnoticed and are deemed underrated. Below, we have listed a few DB’s in Georgia’s 2023 class who we can almost guarantee you’ve never heard of.
Jacob Lindsey- Coffee
What makes Lindsey so fun to watch is his pure ability to not only catch ball carriers in pursuit, but to take good angles when doing so. As a Safety, his ability to come downhill, and make good contact with individuals certainly helps his team a great deal. Lindsey is great at utilizing good leverage, and his ability to wrap up when stopping ball carriers as well. In the passing game, Lindsey also shows to be a great prospect due to his ability to turn and run fluidly, and flip his hips. He breaks down well, using great footwork to put himself in good positions to make stops, and break up passes. His stock will certainly rise as the years go by.
Jaiden Figaro- Arabia Mountain
While Figaro not only shows to have some time as a DB, he also plays offense, and special teams as well. Regardless of the side of the ball he plays on, he has plenty of upside. Not only does he have a unique quickness that allows him to make big plays, but he also has the sudden footwork that allows him to constantly be in a good place to make plays. His burst allows him to come up and make tackles, and his ball skills also allow him to try to make plays on the ball. As he will go on to be an upperclassmen, development in his ability to play a specific position, whether on offense or defense, at a high and consistent level will be key for him.
Will Hawkins- Grayson
Getting playing time at the varsity level at Grayson High School is one of the harder things to do, so we have no problem giving Hawkins recognition, even though most of his reps were at the JV level. As a CB, Hawkins has a ton of upside for the Rams in the coming years. Not only is he a long DB, but he has the size, and speed that coaches look for in a developmental player of his age. With this, he shows a bit of toughness to him, as he has no problem delivering a pop on contact. Hawkins also moves very well laterally, and can stick to his man well in 1 on 1 coverage. Paired with this, he also has good ball skills, and good hands. Look for his name to become more popular over the next few years.
Bryant Murray Jr- Harlem
Not only did Murray see plenty time as a safety this past year, but he also made the most of it. He utilized his speed to be a key factor in making big time tackles and stops. With this, he also shows the ability to play well in coverage, staying in the WR’s hip pocket when running alongside them downfield. While we are a bit iffy on his movement skills due to his inconsistent footwork, we feel he does a good enough job to be able to be able to become a great prospect. His lateral movement skills and fluidity assist him with this a great amount as well.
