While the state playoffs are in full swing and destination Tallahassee is in plain view, south Florida is unveiling a new playoff structure.
With hundreds and hundreds of major college performers each and every year – from Homestead to Palm Beach Gardens – faced with sitting out this 2020 season or playing a limited amount of games – jumped aboard the Tri-County Football Championships, featuring prospects from Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach.

Having Miami Booker T. Washington (4A) and Miami Christopher Columbus (8A) choose whether to defend their state titles or give their current football players a chance to compete in more games, should never have happened at all.
But that is all past everyone now – and tonight (South Miami and Miami Norland), will kick this three-plus week championship series off.
In addition to tonight’s game at Traz Powell Stadium, there are some other key games as well.
Heading into the first round of the inaugural South Florida Tri-County Championships, first year head coach Gerald Cox and his Miami Booker T. Washington Tornadoes are making some noise.
Losing to Miami Columbus (28-12) and North Miami Beach (20-14 OT), things began to change for a team that opted out of the state playoffs.
They beat Norland (32-7) and American (37-0) as they now hit the road to play at Glades Central.
Both the Tornadoes and Raiders (4-0) are set for a game that could turn out to be the best of the first round.
