During a crazy and unique 2020 season, many games were halted and changed. One thing that did not slow down was the pass rush that certain players were able to provide. The top sack leaders in the state were able to put up crazy numbers once again in 2020. Let’s take a look at which players led the state in sacks from the previous season.
1. [player_tooltip player_id="28023" first="Marcus" last="Johnson"] (2022) | Woodrow Wilson: 16 sacks
Johnson is a physical specimen out on the defensive edge. At 6’3, 220-pounds, he has all the makings of an elite prospect. He uses his speed in his pass rush to get off the edge and around offensive lineman. Keep and eye on Johnson during the 2021 season.
2. Luke Doerr-Frederickson (2021) | West Morris: 14 sacks
Frederickson doubled as a fullback because of his incredible size and strength. At linebacker, the West Morris product was able to dominate in the middle of a defense. He was one of the best defenders in the state and it showed up on the stat sheet.
3. Jeffrey Jordan (2021) | Audubon: 13.5 sacks
Jordan led the way for a ferocious Audubon defense during the 2020 season. He had a field day week in and week out getting to the quarterback. He is one player who will be missed next season.
4. AJ Pena (2021) | Somerville: 12 sacks
Pena was another speedster out on the defensive edge. He used his leverage and speed to get to the quarterback and his strength to finish the play.
5. Damir McCrary (2022) | Woodrow Wilson: 12 sacks
The Class of 2022 has some elite pass rushers to keep an eye on. McCrary would fall into that category. The linebacker will have plenty of time to fine tune his game but as of now, he is one of the best in the class.
