Introducing Thomas Myers Thomas Myers LB Moorhead | 2021 State MN
Myers is a 6’2 205-pound edge rusher for the Moorhead Spuds, who is also a team captain. Myers is a player that brings a lot of athleticism off the edge and has an explosive get to the ball move with his first step. Myers can also power rush well-driving guys with his speed and quickness to move on by the big guys on the offensive line. On run blocks, Myers has some leverage to use his power to maintain his gaps. Myer’s biggest weakness is his weight. Because Myers has such good technique and leverage, those are two things he has to depend on because he is in the smaller group of defensive ends and might be a better suit at linebacker at the next level.
Favorites About EDGE
Myers’s favorite part about being an edge rusher is the ability to catch a player in the backfield. He did a fantastic job this season, having 26 tackles for a loss in the Moorhead Spuds shortened 7-game season.
The Recruiting Trail
Myers is one of the top undecided edge rushers in the state but not one who has tons of offers as of yet. Myers has roster spot offers from UW-River Falls and Concordia-Moorhead, and scholarship offers from Jamestown. Most recently, Minnesota-Moorhead, which was his first Division II offers to date, could trend Myers in the right direction as far as his recruiting.
Recruiting Pitch
This was Thomas Myers Thomas Myers LB Moorhead | 2021 State MN recruiting pitch to the coaches that might be reading this:
I bring a hard-working and team-based mentality, I believe I can put my head down and work up the roster and get things done, but if there’s anywhere that needs a player, being there. I love special teams, and I believe I have the athleticism to fill in anywhere needed.
Work Ons from Coaches
Myers is a prime example of a player that has had trouble keeping weight on, so the Moorhead Spuds staff made him hit hard after the 2019 season. “I ended my season at around 175 pounds,” Myers told Prep Redzone Minnesota, and I had to be moved to linebacker because of my lack of size on the line. The Spuds told Myers to shoot for 200 pounds before the 2020 season, and Myers took that goal and beat it, lifting and eating like crazy and getting to 212 pounds before summer workouts ended and settled in at 205 pounds once fall camp started. Myers brings this same mindset into the 2021 season; if any coach wants him to get bigger, he certainly will reach his college football goal.
Mentors
Myers is grateful for the entire Moorhead staff as they all serve as a mentor in their own way. “They struggled to find a position for me, ut after a year at outside linebacker, they placed me at defensive end,” Myers said about his position change as a senior. Myers has gotten very close with Coach Anderson and Coach Stowers; his position coaches through the last two years. Those two and Thomas’s dad Rich Myers are all the biggest mentors in his life, and Thomas stated, I wouldn’t be here without them.”
Learning About Yourself
This was a year where Myers learned a ton about being a leader as a senior captain for the Spuds. Myers had the opportunity to be a player that the young Spuds look up to. “It was big for me and something I always wanted to do,” Myers said about becoming more of a leader his senior year. Myers hopes that next year to do vice versa, to be the young player that looks up to upperclassmen and then fill that role when the time comes to be a leader wherever Myers ends up.
Myers senior tape lives up to the hype of his burst of the line as you learn very quickly that this kid is college football material.
