Northwestern State in Natchitoches will host the LHSAA’s Prep Classic event — as opposed to its usual home at the Superdome in New Orleans — because of concerns related to COVID-19.
But, for all the abnormalities and adjustments, the significance, excitement and levels of talent remain high as ever.
Prep Redzone Louisiana will look at three to seven of each matchup’s remaining unsigned and uncommitted prospects.
Class 2A
No. 1 Many vs. No. 6 Kinder
Sunday, 1 p.m.
Friends Jess Curtis and Bret Fusilier will finally enjoy their long-awaited “rubber match” after splitting state championship games in 2013 and 2014.
Fusilier coached Kinder back to the Superdome the following season to add a 2015 defeat of Mangham to its 2013 crown.
Curtis and Many meanwhile returned in 2019, but fell shy of Ferriday.
The teams will open this week’s action at Turpin Stadium.
2021 Recruiting Class
Bryce Savant — 6-2, 230 DL/P — Kinder
LSU signee Peyton Todd Peyton Todd 6'4" | 210 lbs | P West Monroe | 2021 State LA isn’t Louisiana’s only big, physical college punting prospect to play standout defense for his high school team. Savant earned All-District 5-2A recognition at both punter and defensive line and holds a few college offers from programs such as Arkansas-Monticello, Louisiana College and East Texas Baptist.
Brandon White — 6-2, 225 DL — Kinder
White arrived this year among the Barbe students transplanted when hurricanes hit Lake Charles this fall. The defensive end became one of three Yellow Jackets defensive linemen to earn first-team all-district honors and also garnered a November off from St. Norbert College in Wisconsin and recently visited Louisiana College this month.
Terrence Williams Terrence Williams 6'1" | 215 lbs | RB Many | 2021 State LA — 6-1, 215 RB — Many
The Tigers’ running back was one of the brightest spots in a challenging title game last December. Williams rushed 18 times for 86 yards and both of the team’s touchdowns to earn Many’s Most Outstanding Player honors. He showed his toughness and physicality in that performance, but worked extensively this offseason on his speed, footwork and pass-catching and developed into an all the more impressive and well-rounded a prospect at his size.
Most of the state’s college programs have extended scholarship offers, including Louisiana Tech, Louisiana (Lafayette), ULM, Northwestern State, McNeese State, Nicholls State. And out-of-state contenders for his services include Utah State, South Alabama, New Mexico, Texas State and Lamar.
2023 Recruiting Class
Tackett Curtis — 6-2, 195 DB — Many
Speaking of physicality, the younger Curtis caught everyone’s attention with his hard-hitting as a freshman. And college programs such as Louisiana (Lafayette), Tulane, Louisiana Tech, ULM, Mississippi State, Virginia, Colorado, Virginia Tech and Houston began lining up in his scholarship offers this spring.
The nephew of coach Jess Curtis will be a critical piece of the Tigers’ potential success in this battle of old-school foes, as well as one of the state’s notable prospects to watch in a talented 2023 class already forcing fans and media to pay attention with their impressive play.
