The FHSAA announced that Doak Campbell Stadium – home to the Florida State Seminoles – will host the 2020 title games for all classifications on Dec. 16-19.
The move to Tallahassee was made last year for the 1A, 2A and 3A teams who came to Florida’s capital city – while Daytona Beach hosted 4A-8A.
While many had been very much satisfied with Orlando has a destination, logistics and stadium availability forced the move last year.
Originally scheduled to take place at Gene Cox Stadium, the Class 1A-3A FHSAA Football State Championships have been moved to Doak Campbell Stadium along with the 4A-8A games to allow for a health-first environment with proper social distancing to safely welcome fans, coaches and student-athletes. Two games will be played each day of the Championships and a final schedule by classification will be provided on FHSAA.com once the playoffs conclude. Doak Campbell Stadium holds 79,560 at capacity. FSU officials limited the seating at 25% this season for the Seminoles.
“The FHSAA is excited about the upcoming Florida High School Football State Championships to be hosted at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee,” said FHSAA Executive Director, George Tomyn. “Creating opportunities for our student-athletes has been a top priority of ours this year and finding a facility large enough to safely host all who wish to attend, is a dream come true. We have worked with the folks at Visit Tallahassee and in Leon County for many years now with great success and we could not be more grateful for their efforts in making these championships a reality for the student-athletes of the State of Florida.”
Leon County representatives are projecting an economic boost of $4 million over the four days. This covers lodging, dining as well as shopping at stores and vendors.
Throughout the summer and fall months, there were several conversations between the county and FHSAA about the championship games. The coronavirus was at the center of these discussions.
There’s an overwhelming sense of relief that the pieces of this puzzle fit in place. Now, staffers can work toward completing all details in time for the events.
According to the FHSAA, tickets will be sold online only at a presale rate of $15. The fee rises to $18 if purchased the day of the game. There’s also an advanced parking rate of $3 that’s included in the price of each ticket.
