The Cy-Ranch Mustangs and Klein Oak Panthers face each other this week in the opening round of the state playoffs. Prep Redzone predicts a closely contested matchup and a good game for the Greater Houston area. The Mustangs have had young up and comers spark their late season playoff push while the Panthers have been led by their senior Quarterback, Drew Berra. #12 is crafty in this 2 back offense featuring [player_tooltip player_id="60824" first="Charles" last="Garrett"] and Jamal Stephens. This three headed attack is facing Blake Baker, Jared Sample, [player_tooltip player_id="60685" first="Edwin" last="Smith"]. The Panthers Drew Berra is effective at managing the game from a field general perspective and uses playaction to keep the defense honest. It is Drew who leads this team and commands the huddle. When he is at helm the Panthers’ have a chance at winning. I am going to keep an eye out on how Berra performs in the clutch against the sophomore Ashton Porter DE who is going to be an integral part of the Mustangs keys to success. This matchup between QB and rising DE is going to be a doozy for sure. Porter has emerged as a tenacious pass rusher who has a feisty finesse spin move to thwart the offensive advances. Berra will have to get the Panthers’ in and out of their offensive plays to be successful in this scheme, how he performs will be crucial to the success of the overall process of victory. The coaching staff for Klein Oak will need to gameplan for the front 4 of Ranch for certainly. The one two punch of [player_tooltip player_id="60824" first="Charles" last="Garrett"] and Jamal Stephens is one that feasts for this offense of Klein Oak. They will need to ride their two backs even more now that they are in the playoff mix. In order to win in the playoffs teams must be able to run the ball and convert big 3rd downs, these two backs are capable of propelling Klein Oak to this. It will be interesting to see if getting yardage or time of possession will be important for the Panthers. The Mustangs will be led by Blake Baker after he took over for [player_tooltip player_id="60612" first="DJ" last="Ciers"]. Kameron Burton is the lead tailback and he is spelled by Kash McCray who has cashed in more than once on his sparely opportunities. These guys on Ranch have battled all year and it will be very fun to watch these guys play for a couple more years especially Baker. The sophomore has truly taken command of the team and has forged an identity on how this team should run on a consistent basis. The maturation of Baker has been one I have been keeping up with and his ability to run the read option makes him thorough in making plays for the offense to go full throttle in. He has an array of weapons and knows how to utilize them. He has a moxy to him that is the equivalent of the new kid on the block in this area. He’s a name on the rise in Cypress and with a strong showing this week it could really propel him to make a strong case for more offers his junior year. Kameron Burton and Kash McCray are the parallel to the Panthers’ rushing attack, they plan to counteract any all efforts used to beat them. They play interchangeably and are efficient and effective in their ball carrying skills. They are a massive reason why this team is 7-2. Once this team runs the RPO correctly their tough to stop because they can stop it as well.
