Despite being smaller schools, Group 1 provided some talented playmakers on both sides of the ball in the 2020 football season. A lot of players made strides and made an impact in what was a unique and unpredictable football year. Let’s take a look at some of the best players from Group 1.
<strong>Dario Bryant, Cedar Grove:</strong> Bryant performed at a high level for Cedar Grove all season, throwing for 25 touchdowns to nine interceptions. He accumulated 1,850 passing yards in eight games, also running in four scores. He led Cedar Grove to a 7-1 record this season.
<strong>Hunter Van Zant, Boonton: </strong>Van Zant continued to be Boonton’s go-to option on the ground. He powered his way to 1,748 yards and 21 touchdowns in his junior season. He ran for 200 yards five times. A memorable performance came against Parsippany in the second-to-last game of the season, where the Boonton star totaled 364 yards and four TDs on 26 carries.
<strong>Bhayshul Tuten, Paulsboro: </strong>Tuten ran for 1,229 yards and 19 TDs in Paulsboro’s undefeated season. He found the end zone in every game, including a five-touchdown performance in a shutout win over Haddon Heights. Tuten returned a kickoff for a score and also caught four TDs.
<strong>Anthony Bilotta, Cedar Grove: </strong>Bilotta was often Bryant’s top target as a receiver. Bilotta made 55 receptions for 853 yards and 12 touchdowns. Bilotta was a top downfield threat for Bryant, often outracing his defender and getting separation to make plays. He averaged 106.6 yards per game.
<strong>Makai Brown-Jones, Asbury Park: </strong>Brown-Jones was a top receiving threat for Asbury Park. He finished with seven touchdowns, 27 tackles, a sack, a punt return for a score and a forced fumble. His breakout performance came against Roselle Park, when Asbury Park went for 58 points and Brown-Jones caught eight passes for 243 yards and three TDs.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="28019" first="Anthony" last="Kaspereen"], New Providence: </strong>Kaspereen finished with 55 tackles and two sacks for a New Providence group that finished 8-1 on the year.
<strong>Jeff Yanez, Boonton: </strong>Yanez was a top lineman who created holes for Van Zant in the run game for the Bombers.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="27997" first="Charlie" last="Barth"], New Providence: </strong>Barth ran for 1,510 yards and 19 touchdowns on 174 carries. He ran for 301 yards and four TDs in a victory over Belvidere. Defensively, Barth was just as impactful – making 102 tackles, 2.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He found the end zone at least twice in seven games.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="27972" first="Zion" last="Cheeks"], Penns Grove: </strong>Cheeks had a strong season for Penns Grove with 11 sacks, 55 tackles and four forced fumbles. A Division I prospect at the Power 5 level, Cheeks made an impact on the defensive line for Penns Grove.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="27949" first="Anthony" last="Henriquez"], Hoboken: </strong>Henriquez was active on both ends for Hoboken. He ran 65 times for 644 yards and eight touchdowns. Defensively, he was extremely productive with five sacks, 110.5 tackles, two fumble recoveries and six forced fumbles. Henriquez recorded double-digit tackles in six of seven games.
<strong>Taylor Siciliano, Clayton: </strong>Siciliano was extremely efficient for Clayton with 102 tackles, 6.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two interceptions, including a pick-six.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="27891" first="Nasir" last="Robinson"], Penns Grove: </strong>Robinson was spectacular for Penns Grove. The three-star recruit ran for 1,295 yards and 13 touchdowns, caught two TDs and made 69 tackles to go with two sacks and an interception.
