Malvern was defeated by Shiloh Christian on Friday night, but the Leopards have nothing to hang their heads about. The 2020 season was not a disappointment for Malvern, in fact, it is a step forward in learning what they will have to do to advance in the playoffs.
The Leopards were loaded in 2020 and look to be set up well for the future. Sophomore quarterback Cedric Simmons Cedric Simmons 6'0" | 170 lbs | QB Malvern | 2023 State AR is already earning the attention of division one schools. Simmons has recently earned an offer from the University of Kansas. Simmons passed for 2,550 yards with 21 touchdowns and only 11 interceptions. Proving that he is a true dual-threat quarterback, Simmons rushed for 953 yards for the Leopards this season.
Simmons is only going to get better over the course of the next two seasons. The mix of his throwing accuracy and his ability to pull the ball down and take off with the football keeps the opposing defenses honest. Simmons is one player that should see his offers increase as he continues to work on and off the field.
Simmons will depend upon Marquez Johnson to take some pressure off him next season. Johnson is a good weapon to have because of his versatility. Johnson played both ways for the Leopards in 2020 and excelled on both sides Johnson is a threat in both the rushing game as well as the passing game. He has turned into a reliable wide receiver for Simmons.
The 2020 offseason will be critical for the Malvern football team. The team has talent but getting a summer of seven on seven tournaments and work in the weight room is always a benefit. With any luck the Covid-19 problem will be more under control and teams will be able to put in a full summer of work toward football. However, Malvern is going to be a team on the rise and one to watch out for over the next few seasons.
