One of the state’s top recruits announced his commitment to a Pac 12 school last week.
[player_tooltip player_id="25032" first="Ethan" last="Calvert"], a linebacker from Oaks Christian in Westlake Village, committed to Utah on Thursday.
He drew a lot of attention last year before his junior season and garnered even more after leading the Oaks Christian defense to a successful season.
Calvert had 15 tackles in a game against Helix, one of the top programs in the San Diego area. He has a brother who plays at UCLA and another brother at Washington.
He recently narrowed his list of schools to UCLA, USC and Utah and many experts figured he would stay local.
<p class="p1">"There were a lot of reasons why I chose Utah," Calvert told Greg Biggins of 247Sports. "I’ve always liked how they develop linebackers and their defensive scheme fits me really well. They have huge defensive linemen every year so the ‘backers can run around and make plays."</p>
<p class="p1">"They’re graduating a couple of guys after this season, a couple of starting linebackers, so it will be an open competition for playing time when I get there. I have a really good relationship with the coaching staff and have known those guys for a long time now and it just felt like the best fit for me."</p>
Calvert said that the Utah coaching staff had done home visits with both of his brothers during their recruitment and he felt comfortable with coach Kyle Whittingham. His dad attended Utah as a student and enjoyed the experience.
He is the No. 10 overall prospect in the state according to Prep Redzone and the No. 2 ranked linebacker in the state behind Mater Dei’s [player_tooltip player_id="25026" first="Raesjon" last="Davis"] who is committed to LSU.
