Surprising Cardinal Gibbons Rolls Along
The Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons football team is ready to get back to the state title game. Even a tough loss to Plantation American Heritage will not get in the way of this teams’ goals.
When the 2019 season began, Cardinal Gibbons focused on not only defending their 5A state championship in 2018, but also wanted to reload for another run.
Moving down to 4A, the Chiefs needed to get over several hurdles on the way to repeating. Losing a close contest to eventual state champion Miami Booker T. Washington in the second round, this program headed to the off season with that loss on their minds.
Nobody needs to be reminded what happened next. With no spring or summer because of the pandemic, head coach Matt Dubuc and his staff did what everyone across the state of Florida did – stay safe and hope that the athletes were working out on their own for a season – no matter when it started.
What happened to this program is they declared to play for a state title – and while they began a earlier that some teams, they opened the season more than a month later than many programs across the state.
With many new faces in place, this is a team that very few were picking to make it to state – with quality programs such as Miami Gulliver Prep, Cocoa and St. Petersburg Lakewood standing in the way.
But this program has indeed defied odds in the past!
Despite losing to 5A power and longtime rival Plantation American Heritage, the Chiefs are focused. In addition to the loss at American Heritage, the Chiefs beat Miami Monsignor Pace (28-12), Doral Academy (35-3) and national power St. Thomas Aquinas (17-10).
