Westlake defeated Bowie 45-7 last Thursday at Burger Stadium. The Chaparrals have still not allowed any opponent to score more than seven points this season.
One of the star players for the Chaparrals was senior linebacker Nick Morris, who had three sacks and 12 total tackles. Morris was all over the ball all game, disrupting Bowie junior quarterback Diego Tello. Overall, the Westlake defense was a disruptive force against the Bulldogs, causing Tello to throw two interceptions and junior quarterback Grason Fordadory to throw one. Senior Chapel Stewart, senior Michael Taaffe and senior John (Jax) Crockett each had an interception in the game. Alongside Morris, senior defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id="60594" first="Hayden" last="Bray"] had two sacks and senior linebacker Brady Lamme had one.
Offensively, it was the collaborative effort of senior running backs Grey Nakfoor and [player_tooltip player_id="60490" first="Zane" last="Minors"] which helped give Westlake such a decisive victory. Nakfoor rushed for 53 yards and two touchdowns in just six carries while Minors rushed for 35 yards and one touchdown. On the other hand, junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="60713" first="Cade" last="Klubnik"] threw for 183 yards and three touchdowns with one of those touchdowns going to Minors. However, Klubnik’s favorite target was sophomore wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id="60848" first="Jaden" last="Greathouse"], who had six receptions for 111 yards and one touchdown. Bowie had no answers for the Westlake offense and it seemed as though either Nakfoor or Minors were the go-to players in the red zone.
Another highlight worth mentioning is when senior wide receiver/defensive back Lucas Mireur blocked a Bowie punt which set up the last touchdown of the game in the third quarter.
The only touchdown of the game Westlake allowed was a pass from Tello to senior wide receiver Jason Gaines in the second quarter. Gaines was able to juke out and avoid two Westlake defends right at the endzone in order to make the score. Penalties also played a factor, as one big touchdown pass from Tello to junior wide receiver Anthony Simmons was wiped out due to an illegible man downfield. Penalties plagued both teams all night.
Once more, Westlake is an elite team, but so elite that the Chaparrals continue their defensive streak of just not allowing any teams to truly score on them. However, Westlake still has two looming games against Austin and Lake Travis, some of the toughest contests Westlake will face this season. For Bowie, the Bulldogs also have some tough contests, and the season is not quite over just yet, as they face San Marcos and Hays next.
