The talented tailback from Class 1A Green Sea Floyds declared his intentions to sign with Georgia State late Wednesday night, just days after the Trojans’s season ended.
“I wanted to get around a different environment. I want to be able to adapt to a different environment,” Dixon said Thursday morning. “Georgia State is a big pond, and I’m a small fish. But I’m going to pop out one day.”
Dixon, the No. 34 players in the Prep Red Zone South Carolina 2021 rankings, also had an offer from North Carolina A&T and was expected to draw more interest prior to signing day.
That’s because throughout his high school career – which ended last week – Dixon rushed for 4,310 yards while averaging 8.89 yards per carry. He had 73 career touchdowns rushing and receiving.
Much of that production led the Trojans to Class 1A state titles in 2018 and 2019.
This year, Green Sea Floyds finished third in the region, a spot that normally would have been accompanied with a playoff berth. However, the South Carolina High School League was forced to pare down the postseason brackets across the classifications. Dixon didn’t wait to make good on all the attention Georgia State had given him.
Since offering him a scholarship (the Panthers are the only NCAA FBS program to do so thus far), coaches from Georgia State have made their way to see him play or practice live multiple times. It helped create further trust between the two sides.
Wednesday afternoon, Dixon informed the staff he would be committing. GSU assistant coaches took to Twitter to express their excitement over the news (without directly mentioning him by name). After a few hours, Dixon made it public with a subtle move – changing his Twitter bio.
“I just called them right after school and told them I wanted to be a Panther,” Dixon said. “.I didn’t want to make a big announcement.”
Dixon said he may post a graphic this weekend, but that would be the extent of the flair for his commitment. To him, concentrating on the opportunity – not the background noise – was more important.
