With a box score that looked like a diner menu, there were nine scores of over 40 yards. Ewing took a 26-7 lead after one quarter, opening the game with a 26-0 lead. Allentown rallied with a 21-8 second quarter and a 14-8 third quarter.
Ewing did the majority of its work on the ground, led by the efforts of Gabe Abel. Abel was unstoppable on the ground with a jaw-dropping 350 yards on 18 carries, scoring on runs of 34, 40, 50, 54 and 59 yards.
Mekhi Gibson had five carries for 97 yards and scored on runs of 52 and 40 yards. He was just as good in other areas, catching a 44-yard catch from quarterback Tariq McKinney and taking an interception back 57 yards for a score.
Aaron Forde made a tremendous impact on the defensive side for Ewing, finishing with 10 tackles and a pair of sacks. D’Mitri was also a force with 11 tackles, as was Chandler Williams’ contribution of nine tackles and a sack.
Allentown, on the other end, was a bit more of a balanced attack. Quarterback Dan Merkel threw 43 times in comparison to McKinney’s seven for Ewing.
Merkel, despite the pick-six, was efficient overall, throwing for 295 yards and three TD passes. His biggest connection was with Claudius Mbachu on a 58-yard strike for six.
Merkel carried 27 times for 147 yards, with three TDs, as he was extremely efficient in the red zone.
You would think a quarterback going for over 400 yards would be enough for a victory, but in a wild 2020 season, nothing has been predictable.
In total, seven players made a catch for Allentown, and Tim Emrich and Anderson Umoru finished with TD receptions.
Daniel Cruz scored twice on runs for Allentown.
There were a total of 23 penalties in the game for a combined 166 yards. Both teams combined for just six punts in the back-and-forth shootout.
