Last friday, Midwest City opened up their newly renovated Jim Darnell stadium and held their Senior night as they took on the Lawton Wolverines. They started slow with an interception on their first play form scrimmage and had penalty troubles all night, but their stars shined brightly in this matchup as they would go on to win 34-9. Here are a few players who really stood out.
[player_tooltip player_id="51855" first="DeAngelo" last="Irvin Jr"] - Quarterback - Class of 2023
One of the reasons we chose to highlight this game is because we wanted to see how [player_tooltip player_id="51855" first="DeAngelo" last="Irvin Jr"] had developed since we first saw him in week zero against Westmoore, and he showed some promising signs against Lawton. Irvin was 13-23 for 229 yards with 2 touchdowns passing and had a rushing touchdown as well. While he had 3 interceptions and made some questionable throws in this game, Irvin is still a young QB who saves his best plays for big-time moments. If he can minimize his mistakes and throw with more consistency, he could be one of the top playmakers in 6A-II.
[player_tooltip player_id="38499" first="Makale" last="Smith"] - Wide Receiver/ Defensive Back - Class of 2021
Usually, we would just list [player_tooltip player_id="38499" first="Makale" last="Smith"] as a cornerback, but similar to when we first saw him against Westmoore, the Oklahoma State commit was MWC’s top pass catcher on the night despite not being listed on the teams 2-deep depth chart at WR entering the game. Makale finished with 2 catches for 78 yards and two touchdowns and had another long touchdown catch that was called back because of a holding penalty. Smith is committed to the Cowboys as a defensive back, but if he’s not careful they might move him to WR when he arrives on campus in 2021.
[player_tooltip player_id="38613" first="Kristawn" last="Friday"] - Running Back/ Linebacker - Class of 2021
I got a weird sense of Deja Vu when I watched [player_tooltip player_id="38613" first="Kristawn" last="Friday"] against Lawton. When I watched him against Westmoore, Friday had multiple TFL’s and picked off [player_tooltip player_id="38527" first="Dayton" last="Wolfe"] in the RedZone. Against Lawton, Friday recorded 5 tackles, a couple of which went for a loss, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and a pick-six. Friday was simply all over the field against the Wolverines and is a guy who could move up our boards when we update rankings in a few weeks if he keeps producing at this rate.
[player_tooltip player_id="55910" first="BJ" last="Wilson Jr"] - Wide Receiver/ Defensive Back - Class of 2021
[player_tooltip player_id="55910" first="BJ" last="Wilson Jr"] is a player I wrote down and put a star next to his name early in this game because I was truly impressed by his speed and ability to chase down a ball carrier on the opposite side of the field when Lawton had a big play early in the game. Wilson then proceeded to have a pretty good night on defense with a few tackles and pass breakups but what I really loved was the 48-yard touchdown he had on a reverse in the 3rd quarter. This kid has some wheels and he showed them off against Lawton.
[player_tooltip player_id="38592" first="LJ" last="Long-Jackson"] - Linebacker - Class of 2021
LJ is another senior out of this talented Midwest City 2021 class who impressed big time in this game. While [player_tooltip player_id="38613" first="Kristawn" last="Friday"] patrolled the field and forced turnovers all night, LJ was constantly in the backfield shutting down Lawton’s hopes of a comeback in the second half. With schools like Del City, Owasso, and Edmond Santa Fe, the class of 2021 is loaded with some elite linebacker duos, but don’t go sleeping on the pair of Senior backers in Midwest City. They are just as capable of taking over a game on defense as any LB core in the state.
[player_tooltip player_id="55911" first="Brandon" last="Wright"] - Defensive Back - Class of 2021
[player_tooltip player_id="55911" first="Brandon" last="Wright"] is a fun player to watch let me tell you what. He may not be a top DB prospect in the state of Oklahoma, but he flies around with more intensity than just about any player I’ve watched this season. Wright is excellent at tracking guys down in the open field, he doesn’t miss many one on one tackle opportunities. I marked him down as a hard hitter against Westmoore, and to be honest, I think I may have understated his hitting ability. If he can get an open late to generate some speed before a tackle, Wright is possibly one of the hardest hitting defensive backs in the state. QBs, beware of this man when throwing screens or hitches.
