While the Toledo City League battle for dominance as the last league standing, everyone else will be preparing for week 1 of the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) in Northwest Ohio. Six weeks of sample size and for some teams, less than that. With the help of area coaches and media, here are your top QBs in Northwest Ohio thus far.
Eli Brown, Bowling Green ’21
“Bad Bad Eli Brown”, as Anthony Bellino, the host of BCSN’s flagship show Gameday Nation calls him every week. Eli Brown is not what you would call a “Traditional” quarterback in stature, but his play has been ELIte. Eli has the ability to run the Bowling Greens option offensive attack to a science and has been nothing less than spectacular in his gameplay. His ability to break tackles and use his speed and quickness to make big plays is why Bowling Green will be a threat in the playoffs.
Joseph Dzierwa, Otsego ’22
The Knights finished the 2020 season with a perfect 6-0 record and claiming the league title for the first time in over a decade. Dzierwa, the lefty, is the leader of this football team, and his output was impressive. Joe’s 1,300 yards in the air and 18 touchdowns shocked the league while letting NW Ohio know that a new gunslinger is on the rise from the school of fewer than 450 students.
Bishop Vargas Bishop Vargas 5'11" | 165 lbs | QB Toledo Central Catholic | 2021 State OH , Central Catholic ’21
The fighting Irish are looked at as the Warlords of high school football in Northwest Ohio. Vargas has really bounced back in a big way in 2020, keep the Irish undefeated. Due to COVID, the sample size is small but enough to know that Vargas has the tools to get the loaded Irish over the mountain top like a true leader. Bishop and the Irish are 4-0 heading into the playoffs and expect the veteran QB to play big in round two.
Christian Gulgin, Perrysburg ’21
Perrysburg football is back and in a big way! Gulgin has been the catalyst for the yellow jackets this 2020 season while being provided a little help from his friends. You have to take a deeper look at the film to understand that Gulgin has made important plays on his feet along with his arm to get the Yellow Jackets a perfect 6-0 season. Gulgin will have a chance to prove his greatness as they take on Ketterington Fairmont in the D1 Playoffs.
Max Roth, Findlay ’22
Max Roth is an electric QB with the ability to create by land or air. Findlay has developed a new and nasty style of football in part of head coach Matt Pees. Roth has emerged after his week one performance against the Whitmer Panthers in a shocking victory. Covid-19 has hindered the 2020 season as Roth, and the Trojans could only compete in 4 out of the six games and finished the season 3-1.
Kaden Holmes, Fremont Ross ’23
Holmes has stolen NW Ohio football fans hearts while taking the Fremont Ross Little Giants into the TRAC’s upper echelon. During the last 2 weeks of the regular season, he was impressive, to say the least. Kaden passed for over 1,100 yards in close losses to St. John’s and St. Francis; it’s safe to say the league is on notice of the 2023 QB.
Jay Moten, Northwood ’21
Jay has become one of the greatest Quarterbacks to walk the halls of Northwood high school. Since 2019, Moten has led his team to a 16 and 0 regular-season record. Jay has had multiple performances in which he has passed and rushed for a bevy of touchdowns. Recently, Moten launched an amazing seven touchdown attack vs. Edon in week five.
Brady Lichtenberg Brady Lichtenberg 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB St. John's Jesuit | 2021 State OH , St John’s Jesuit ’21
Lichtenberg is the clear cut best QB in the class of 2021 in the state of Ohio. His performance this season has not disappointed, and his team has enjoyed much success. His accuracy and IQ are unmatched when it comes to dissecting a defense. Brady has passed for over 8,000 yards in his high school career. Special!
