National Battle Tonight In Miami-Dade Opener

It doesn’t get any better. Tonight in Miami, defending 6A state champion Miami Central and three-time defending 5A state champion Miami Northwestern will kickoff the 2020 season.

While they had to sit back and watch high school football being played in their own state for the past two months, south Florida programs were not pleased that many would be left out of the playoff mix this season – because of Covid-19. With the calendar ready to hit November, public schools in Miami-Dade County will attempt to make up for plenty of lost time as they are finally getting the chance to play.

With only Homestead, Miami Palmetto, Miami Edison, Miami Central and Miami Northwestern opting in to play for a state title, the short season gets under way with some marquee games taking place all over Miami-Dade. Perhaps none bigger than national powers Miami Northwestern, three-time defending state champions, who won in 5A last season, against defending 6A state champion Miami Central. These two programs are indeed the blueprint for public high schools nationally. Both bring into tonight’s 7:30 start at Traz Powell Stadium plenty of tradition and some of the top athletes in the nation. While the pandemic is going to limit who gets to watch the game live, you can expect the type of game that we always get from these two powers. Central and Northwestern is indeed a marquee matchup. One that may be the best prospect game in the nation this week, but there are also some other key games in the Sunshine State to keep an eye on as well.
