ST. CLOUD-- I watched the score lines of the Moorhead Spuds first two games, and I said this week, "I need to see them for myself." They certainly lived up to the hype rolling over the Sabres by a 44 point margin by a score of 56-12. The Sabres were very close to hitting their end of my late afternoon game prediction (14), but the Spuds spun well over my prediction of 35 points.
FIRST QUARTER
After the Sabres came up empty on their drive and played fantastic defense to start the drive set up by a big sack by [player_tooltip player_id="18088" first="Ethan" last="Torgrimson"], the [player_tooltip player_id="18044" first="Trey" last="Feeney"] and [player_tooltip player_id="18076" first="Brady" last="Walthall"] night connection got started for the rest of the night, as Feeney found Walthall over the top of the Sabres secondary for a 57-yard pass for 6. Moorhead 7, Sartell-St. Stephen 0
It was very late in the 1st quarter when [player_tooltip player_id="18183" first="Jacqui" last="Fitzpatrick"] picked off a [player_tooltip player_id="19010" first="Cole" last="Hentges"] pass near the end of the first quarter, which set up another [player_tooltip player_id="18076" first="Brady" last="Walthall"] touchdown from [player_tooltip player_id="18044" first="Trey" last="Feeney"] about 37 yards. Moorhead 14, Sartell-St. Stephen 0
SECOND QUARTER
In the second quarter, [player_tooltip player_id="18044" first="Trey" last="Feeney"] realized there are other studs with the last name Walthall as he connected with [player_tooltip player_id="18075" first="Blake" last="Walthall"] to make it a three-score game for the Moorhead Spuds. Moorhead 21, Sartell-St. Stephen 0
After a critical interception for Sartell-St. Stephen deep in Spuds territory on their 5, the Sabres would put their big man to work as [player_tooltip player_id="18088" first="Ethan" last="Torgrimson"] would punch it from one yard out. Moorhead blocked XP. Moorhead 21, Sartell-St. Stephen 6
Although we may keep repeating ourselves, Moorhead would take a 4th and 27 on the Sabres 36 yard line, and on that next play, [player_tooltip player_id="18044" first="Trey" last="Feeney"] would go back to his favorite target on the night in [player_tooltip player_id="18076" first="Brady" last="Walthall"] to get another big gain touchdown from 36 yards out. Moorhead 28, Sartell-St. Stephen 6. Halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
I said it earlier in my preview, how the Spuds have a couple of quality running backs they can go to. They did just that on their next score, finding Geroge Nyonforth, who has a nice burst from 12 yards out to make it five touchdowns for the Spuds. Moorhead 35, Sartell-St. Stephen 6
The next two touchdowns would go back to [player_tooltip player_id="18076" first="Brady" last="Walthall"], who had a career game five touchdowns of over 200 yards. Moorhead 49, Sartell-St. Stephen 6
After finally going to the second string, the scoring didn’t stop for the Spuds, as a couple of young guns got into the action when QB Gavin Quade hit Clayton Hagenback to make it a 50 burger from the Moorhead Spuds. Moorhead 56, Sartell-St. Stephen 6
Sartell would score the last points of the game with no time remaining, but by that point, I was freezing and did not get the name of the player that scored! Final. Moorhead 56, Sartell-St. Stephen 12
Find out who the Big Dogs of the Game were tomorrow morning, as I’ll give you a hint: A couple of them are a family of Spuds wide receivers and a quarterback who threw six touchdowns.
