Continue ReadingThe Minneapolis North and SMB-Wolfpack’s offenses were putting on a clinic Friday night at North’s Hobbs Field. Especially with the Polars’ offense, who scored every time they had the ball except on the final possession when they ran out the clock to secure the 38-33 victory. There were plenty of stars – especially on offense. Here are five players who stood out to me.
Terrance Kamara Terrance Kamara 5'9" | RB Minneapolis North | 2021 State MN RB Mpls North
Kamara dominated from the first possession of the game. He scored four rushing touchdowns and was the center of everything the Polars’ offense did. He consistently showed quick feet and excellent cutback ability. He had success inside with North’s inside trap game and success outside using his speed to get to the corners. He used a nice read and cut back to set up his first touchdown. Then, on a run designed to go between the tackles, Kamara bounced it outside for a twelve-yard gain. Next, in the open field, Kamara made a move in the hole that left the defender grasping at air. After catching a swing pass, it looked like the defender had an angle on him, but his speed ate up the angle and allowed him to get up the field. Finally, his speed got him the corner again and resulted in a 68-yard touchdown run.
Mario Sanders Mario Sanders 5'10" | 180 lbs | WR MPLS North | 2022 State MN WR Mpls North
Sanders got loose down the right sidelines twice early in the game. On both balls, he made nice adjustments to make both catches. The first resulted in a 60-yard touchdown, and the second picked up 30 yards – setting up North’s second touchdown. Sanders is one of North’s kick returners. He set his offense up at the SMB 35 by taking a short kick-off and wisely using his blockers. In the second half, Sanders took a short pass and should have been tackled for a short loss. Instead, he made a move to avoid the tacklers and sprinted 76-yard touchdown.
Davon Townley Davon Townley 6'6" | DL Minneapolis North | 2021 State MN DE Mpls North
The defense had trouble stopping SMB in the first half, but the second half was a different story. The defense was on the field a lot and only gave up two scoring drives. Townley was hard to miss in the second half. He made a tackle for a short gain. Later he came down the line of scrimmage from his defensive end spot to make a tackle for a short gain. Then, he held contain and made a tackle on the outside for short yardage. Finally, Townley fought off a block at the line of scrimmage and destroyed the running back who was trying to get the corner.
Zach Yeager Zach Yeager 6'2" | QB Minneapolis North | 2021 State MN QB Mpls North
Yeager threw two deep balls early in the game to set the tone. Both were slightly underthrown but got the job done. When his protection broke down, Yeager was still effective. In the first half, he faced immediate pressure but was able to make a man miss, get around the corner and pick up five yards. Yeager’s number was called on some designed runs too. He put his shoulder down and picked up 19 yards to the one-yard line. Later in the game, he would score a short touchdown on a quarterback sneak.
Savon Redd RB SMB
On the Wolfpack’s second possession, Redd used his speed on a run around the corner. On a third and long, he caught a 24-yard touchdown pass right at the flag, keeping his feet in bounds. Sweeping to the right, North had Redd bottled up, but his speed allowed him to get the corner. Redd showed his explosive speed with a run between the tackles; Redd broke into the secondary and didn’t stop until he was in the end zone. He did it again on what looked to be almost the same play – scoring from 55 yards out. Redd used some quick feet to avoid defenders and pick up big yardage late in the game. He would end the game with four total touchdowns.
