Last Friday at Mullen High School, a group of coaches, trainers and timers that included Athletafied and Pivotal Sports Performance hosted a free combine for high school seniors to record verified times and marks to send to coaches.
Prospects in the Class of 2021 like Ralston Valley linebacker [player_tooltip player_id="22640" first="Will" last="Lester"], who has an offer from Missouri Western State, have seen their recruitment slowed by a coronavirus-related combination of dead periods, the postponement of Colorado’s football season to the spring and a lack of camps or other opportunities to show what they can do. Lester and many others were grateful for Friday’s event and a chance to get measured and add 40-yard dash, broad jump, shuttle and vertical leap numbers to their recruiting resumes.
“This is just making the best of what it is,” Lester said. “If we don’t have a season, you know, at least these people were out here and are nice enough to put this on for us to give us something. You just have to play with the cards you’re dealt and this should help us.”
Nearly 100 athletes showed up for Friday’s free event and many impressed. In case you missed the top 40-yard dash article, check it out here. Here is a look at who hit the top seven broad jump marks, as well as a complete list of the distances each player jumped.
[player_tooltip player_id="22640" first="Will" last="Lester"], 6’0, 186 lbs, 77” wingspan – 125
The aforementioned Ralston Valley linebacker has the tools to play at the next level and one of those tools certainly is his leg drive and ability to explode through a ball carrier. With long arms, as well as great strength and speed, Lester led a Ralston Valley team that reached the Class 5A semifinals with 105 tackles including eight tackles for loss and four sacks. He also had an interception, four pass deflections, three fumbles recovered and two more caused. He does have an offer from Missouri Western State but it won’t be his last.

[player_tooltip player_id="22655" first="Garrett" last="McConnell"], 6’1.5, 173 lbs, 73.5” wingspan – 120.5
McConnell is an explosive athlete who tested well in every event at the combine. His broad jump was second best and he has been putting in a ton of work to get stronger and faster this summer. The dynamic safety led Lakewood with 105 tackles last season, also coming up with an interception and a fumble recovery. At the rate he’s going, he’ll be a player everyone should keep an eye on when high school football returns to Colorado.

Kase Sundarapura, 6’0.5, 178 lbs, 74” wingspan – 116
Flying under the radar a bit to this point, Sundarapura is another athlete who turned plenty of heads at Mullen High School last Friday night. Playing receiver as a junior at D’Evelyn, he was good for around 50 yards a game and caught a touchdown in 2019. As a defensive back, he averaged over five tackles a game and was also tied for third in all of Class 2A with five interceptions.
Jens Anderson, 6’0, 181.8 lbs, 73.5” wingspan – 116
This kid put up impressive numbers in every event at the combine – he ran the fastest 40-yard dash time – after carrying the ball 69 times for 275 yards as a junior last season. The Castle View senior certainly will be a player to watch when high school football returns to Colorado in the spring.
Wyatt Price, 5’11.5, 193.6 lbs, 74.5” wingspan – 116
Another athlete who showed out in the 40-yard dash, Price was just behind Anderson in both events at the combine. One of the most dynamic players at Mullen last Friday, the Fountain-Fort Carson senior can play a number of different positions. He accounted for 495 yards of total offense as a junior, throwing for 337 yards and five touchdowns while rushing for 158 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also played some linebacker and finished the season with seven tackles and a sack on defense.

[player_tooltip player_id="22558" first="Christopher" last="Bowerfind"], 5’11, 202.4 lbs, 75.25” wingspan – 115
The upcoming football season has the potential to be a great one for Fossil Ridge and Bowerfind is one of the main reasons why. Take a quick scroll through his twitter account and you’ll see just how much work he’s been putting in this summer to add size and strength for his senior campaign, as well as for the next level. Among the strongest athletes at the combine, Bowerfind’s broad jump was as impressive as his 4.96 40-yard dash time on the thick offseason grass at Mullen. As a junior in 2019, the running back/athlete recruit rushed for over 500 yards and scored seven touchdowns.

Max Hart, 5’10, 137.6 lbs, 72” wingspan – 114.5
A very good kicker for Dakota Ridge, Hart also epitomizes the jack-of-all-trades player. As a junior, he was sixth on the team with 54 tackles and had three interceptions while playing defensive back. He also made five of seven field goal attempts with a long of 43 yards, according to MaxPreps.
