(Free) Midwest City defeats Lawton 34-9
On Friday night, Midwest City opened up their newly renovated stadium and had Senior night and their home opener on the same night during a season full of uncertainties to guarantee that their seniors got the celebration and recognition that they deserved. Early on in the night, it seemed like the festivities distracted the Bombers a bit as they started off slow, but by the midway point of the third quarter, they had regrouped and began to pull away from Lawton. Let’s dive in and take a deeper look at Midwest City’s win in their first game in the newly renovated Jim Darnell stadium.
First Half
Lawton started off the scoring in the first half with a field goal on their first drive. The Wolverines then picked off DeAngelo Irvin Jr DeAngelo Irvin Jr 5'8" | QB Midwest City | 2023 State OK on his first pass attempt and seemingly had all the momentum. However, they were unable to capitalize and Midwest City scored quickly on their next drive with a pass from Irvin Jr to Oklahoma State commit Makale Smith Makale Smith 5'11" | DB Midwest City | 2021 State OK to take a 7-3 lead. Then, later in the first quarter, after holding MWC in the RedZone, Donovan Dorsey was picked off by Kristawn Friday Kristawn Friday 5'9" | RB Midwest City | 2021 OK for a pick 6. Lawton responded to the pick 6 by driving down the field and scoring on a Christian Houston Christian Houston 6'0" | RB Lawton | 2021 State OK run to bring them within 5 points after a failed 2 pt conversion. The end of the first half was riddled with turnovers as both teams exchanged interceptions off of drops on back to back plays. MWC got the better end of the deal though as their interception set them up in the RedZone where they would score a touchdown to go up 20-9 entering the half after a failed PAT.
Second Half
To begin the second half, Midwest City drove down the field and would score on a long pass from Irvin to Makale Smith Makale Smith 5'11" | DB Midwest City | 2021 State OK , but a holding penalty on the bombers would bring the play back. That drive would end on an interception by Lawton’s Jayden Sincere Howard near the goal line on 4th and goal, and that was just the beginning of what turned out to be a 3rd quarter that was full of penalties and turnovers for both teams. On the drive following the interception, Lawton had a few impressive plays by QB Donovan Dorsey and RB Christian Houston Christian Houston 6'0" | RB Lawton | 2021 State OK , but penalties negated multiple big plays and forced them to punt the ball back to Midwest City. MWC’s following drive was once again riddled with holding penalties but the Bombers managed to produce big play after big play in the second half as Brian Wilson Jr found the endzone on a 48-yard reverse where he showed some impressive speed to give MWC a 27-9 lead with a few minutes to go in the 3rd quarter. The Bombers would then begin to flex their muscles on Lawton as they would force them to a 3 and out on the last drive of the 3rd quarter and then started the 4th quarter with another long touchdown pass to Makale Smith Makale Smith 5'11" | DB Midwest City | 2021 State OK to put things out of reach at 34-9. The remainder of the 4th quarter was tough for Lawton as they would fail to score and turned the ball over for the 3rd time on a strip from Kristawn Friday Kristawn Friday 5'9" | RB Midwest City | 2021 OK that would serve as the nail in the coffin for the Wolverines.

Looking Ahead
Lawton came into this game at an impressive 3-0, and while this loss hurts quite a bit, they still have a team full of experienced Seniors who can control their own future as long as they can rebound and keep winning.
As we wrote earlier in the year on Midwest City, if they started hot early on then their power and speed would be tough to defend for any team. They did not start the hottest in this game and they shot themselves in the foot many times with penalties and turnovers, yet they still managed to score 34 points. With a developing star at Qb in DeAngelo Irvin Jr DeAngelo Irvin Jr 5'8" | QB Midwest City | 2023 State OK , and a cast of talented upperclassmen, I still believe that Midwest City has a team capable of making a deep run in the playoffs if they can minimize mistakes and turnovers.
