We have reached the official start of the season with Week 1 games in the book. But as they say, the show must go on and we will finish out our previews as we have done in recent weeks.
With that said, we are going to take a look at the top skill position players from as many districts as possible in the state before fall camps begin.
Some of these players are already receiving college interest, while others are looking to catch the eye of that right coach.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="23814" first="Jayden" last="Williams"] - West Des Moines Valley</strong>
There is a long list of top running backs to come from West Des Moines Valley’s program, and [player_tooltip player_id="23814" first="Jayden" last="Williams"] is the latest.
Williams ran for 1,043 yards and scored 12 touchdowns last year, forming a 1-2 punch with Creighton Mitchell. He averaged almost eight yards per carry, adding five receptions for another 31 yards.
In the opener vs. Des Moines Roosevelt, Williams had 21 carries for 113 yards and two scores.
[player_tooltip player_id="22519" first="Jake" last="Rubley"] - West Des Moines Valley
He officially has no stats in the state of Iowa from last year, but West Des Moines Valley’s [player_tooltip player_id="22519" first="Jake" last="Rubley"] is among the top players to grace the land this season.
Rubley transferred from Colorado after the prep season was postponed. He’s already committed to Kansas State University.
In his first game with the Tigers, Rubley completed 11 of 24 for 146 yards with a pair of touchdowns. His father, former NFL player T.J. Rubley, attended was a first team all-stater for Davenport West.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="23828" first="Jase" last="Bauer"] - Ankeny</strong>
Other names might have garnered more headlines, but [player_tooltip player_id="23828" first="Jase" last="Bauer"] from Ankeny was right there as on the short list of top quarterbacks in the state of Iowa last year.
Bauer completed 126 of 205 passes for 2,207 yards with 20 touchdowns. He averaged 17.5 yards per completion and ran for 369 yards and six more scores.
In those 200-plus passes, Bauer was picked off just six times.
Bauer opened the year with an 11-for-14, 213-yards, 4-touchdown showing vs. Ankeny Centennial, while also running for 62 yards.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="23810" first="Brody" last="Brecht"] - Ankeny</strong>
He is already committed to the University of Iowa, but you have to include [player_tooltip player_id="23810" first="Brody" last="Brecht"] on any list talking about Class of 2021 players.
Brecht caught 35 passes for 796 yards and seven touchdowns a year ago, averaging almost 23 yards per completion. He had three catches for 55 yards with two touchdowns in Week 1 this season.
<strong>Kyler Peterson - Sioux City East</strong>
Class of 2021’s Kyler Peterson offers Sioux City East a multi-talented running back.
Peterson ran for 466 yards with six touchdowns as a junior, averaging over six yards per carry. He added one reception.
In the season opener, Peterson ran for 83 yards with two touchdowns, adding three receptions for 44 yards including two more scores.
<strong>Hunter Jones - Council Bluffs Jefferson</strong>
Not much went right on offense for Council Bluffs Jefferson a year ago, but the Yellow Jackets will hope for better results this fall.
Class of 2021 player Hunter Jones put up solid numbers as a receiver.
Jones caught 10 passes for 228 yards with three touchdowns, averaging just under 23 yards per catch. He also made 34.5 tackles on defense including seven solo stops, forced three turnovers and had a defensive touchdown.
