After a delay due to COVID-19, the high school football season finally kicked off this past weekend. There were plenty of big time performances throughout the state, but here are some of the top performers on the west side of the state from the 2021 class.
[player_tooltip player_id="29812" first="Blake" last="Bosma"] | WR | West Ottawa
Bosma may have had the best opening week performance in the entire state in a 49-28 loss against Caledonia. The senior wideout had 18 receptions for 207 yards and four touchdowns while tacking on a two-point conversion and 120 return yards. He holds two D1 offers from Valparaiso and Presbyterian, but he should be getting way more interest from schools on all levels.
[player_tooltip player_id="29634" first="Carson" last="VanderHoff"] | RB | Caledonia
VanderHoff might be the most underrated running back in the state, but he made his name known in Week 1. The senior carried the ball 28 times for 224 yards and three touchdowns to help lead his team to an opening night win. VanderHoff is a big back that has proven he can handle a heavy workload and should certainly be receiving more opportunities to take his talents to the next level.
[player_tooltip player_id="29754" first="Cam" last="Terry"] | RB | Grandville
Terry put up an impressive stat line in just two quarters of play in a blowout 62-18 win over Grand Haven. He rushed the ball 13 times for 191 yards and two touchdowns. Terry has great speed and he showed it Friday night. He has received double digit offers to this point in his recruitment and I’m interested to see if any D1 programs take notice of his talents.
[player_tooltip player_id="29760" first="Marcel" last="Love"] | RB | Grandville
Love only had ten touches in three quarters of play, but he made the most of them as he racked up 250 all purpose yards and four touchdowns. He and Terry form a dangerous one-two punch for Grandville and they will be tough for opposing defenses to contain. Love has received D2, NAIA and D3 interest and should continue to rack up more offers if he performs like this on a consistent basis.
[player_tooltip player_id="29817" first="Mahki" last="Matthews"] | WR/TE | Wyoming
The Morgan State commit had a nice debut to start the season despite a 60-20 loss to Zeeland West. Matthews caught 11 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown. Morgan State has been his only D1 scholarship offer so far, but he has intriguing size and athleticism for the receiver position and could see more D1 interest throughout his senior year.
