At the beginning of the month, I highlighted the top quarterbacks in the San Diego Section. It is only appropriate that near the end of the month I highlight the receivers who benefit from those outstanding quarterbacks.
Kenny Stills and other talented receivers have come from San Diego and the classes of 2021 and 2022 are loaded with talent at the position. Earlier this week I highlighted the players ranked 6-10 at the position. Here is a look at the top five returning receivers in the San Diego Section.
5. [player_tooltip player_id="25149" first="Vance" last="Jefferson"], Poway, Poway, 2021
He only played five games last year for Poway due to a knee injury, but he was on his way to becoming the team’s leading receiver. He had two touchdowns against Olympian and 6 catches for 81 yards and a touchdown against Ramona. He is 6-feet, 185-pounds with plus speed. He has offers from Arizona State, Central Michigan, Colorado State, Holy Cross and San Diego with Arizona State leading the pack according to recruiting analysts.

4. [player_tooltip player_id="25190" first="Josh" last="Meredith"], Mater Dei Catholic, Chula Vista, 2021
Fresno State worked really hard to recruit California talent this year and one of those prospects they landed is Meredith. He plays on the well-known 7 on 7 club Team Makasi led by coach Verlain Betofe, who is now the offensive coordinator at Mater Dei. Meredith was the best player at Valhalla last season and he will get a good amount of targets at Mater Dei playing alongside receivers [player_tooltip player_id="25211" first="Jessie" last="Campbell"] and Ray Romero and quarterback Trevor Appleman.

3. [player_tooltip player_id="25238" first="Jalil" last="Tucker"], Lincoln, San Diego, 2022
Tucker is always a threat for a big play whenever he is on the field. He averaged 26 yards per reception at St. Augustine last season as a sophomore. He transfers to Lincoln and adds to its plethora of offensive weapons. Tucker has real speed and route-running skills and has 17 offers with Cal adding its name to the list earlier this week. He is a welcome addition to an offensive with multiple D1 level quarterbacks in Tyler Jensen and [player_tooltip player_id="2472" first="Samuel" last="Cooper"].

2. [player_tooltip player_id="25129" first="Kamron" last="Beachem"], Oceanside, Oceanside, 2021
Beachem is a nightmare for defensive coordinators. At 6-foot-5, 200 pounds, it is tempting to put a linebacker with size on him, but he is too fast for a backer to cover and too big for a safety to cover. He didn’t have gaudy numbers in Oceanside’s run-heavy offense last season, but when his number was called, he delivered. His speed could be better but he makes up for it with his size and hands. He has great chemistry with quarterback Jakob Harris. Beachem is committed to Arizona State.

1a. [player_tooltip player_id="25160" first="Clay" last="Petry"], Helix, La Mesa, 2021
Petry had some of the most impressive numbers in the county last season for Bishop’s of La Jolla, catching 68 passes for 1204 yards and 14 touchdowns. He is 6-foot-2, 200 pounds, fast enough to get open in man coverage and has the size and 30 inch vertical leap to win one-on-one battles. He won’t have quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="25025" first="Tyler" last="Buchner"], who is opting out of his senior season to enroll early at Notre Dame, but he will still have a very productive senior year at Helix. He has 11 offers with Boise State and San Diego State leading the pack.

1b. [player_tooltip player_id="25082" first="DJ" last="Justice"], Lincoln, San Diego, 2021
Justice, son of former MLB star David Justice, was the second leading receiver for a fantastic Alemany team last season. He had 707 yards and eight touchdowns playing with USC commit [player_tooltip player_id="25028" first="Miller" last="Moss"]. Justice transferred to Lincoln, who unarguably has the best receiving corps in San Diego and one of the top ones in Southern California. Justice returns to San Diego, he spent his sophomore year at Cathedral Catholic, and will put up big numbers for Lincoln. He committed to UCLA in March and is one of two California receivers to commit there, along with [player_tooltip player_id="25069" first="Ezavier" last="Staples"] of Millikan. Yeah, I cheated and put six guys on here. Deal with it.
